Last evening, a chamber choir of which I’m a member, met for the first time after more than a year to sing in person (yes, with our masks on). I recalled American composer @ericwhitacre used to tell us when we “met” for rehearsals last year for his Virtual Choir 6 project, that the magic of being in a choir, singing in a choir, is that very moment when everyone took a collective breath, and sang the first note. 😱 That very breath, to Eric, was the defining difference between a choir and other musical groups. The song which we’d practiced last night was “The Road Not Taken”, based on a poem by Robert Frost. Frost wrote about the important decisions we have to make in life, and the ironies that we think the other option (which we didn’t take) was better and that we had missed something by not taking the other road. The composer Adam Paltrowitz wrote that “I composed this piece in the winter after I had one on one conversations with several of my high school students. Each student was trying to figure out which school will be a right fit for them but felt a sense of fear that whatever choice they made, there will be doubts in their minds. What if I chose the wrong school?” Decisions. Regret. That’s what we face in life everyday. It’s quite emotional for me to see the church being filled again with so many people, that we can all gather (yes, with the mask on our face) to celebrate Easter. I was seated on the last row of the choir stall with the cross right behind my shoulder (see photo) 😇. I couldn’t take my eyes off the many bright, cheerful floral decorations at the front of the church.
