We love each other dearly but man, oh man, we had a tumultuous relationship growing up. I’ve lost count of the amount of times we used to argue and fight. Not just argue, but actually physically fight. Like most brothers, I think. Certainly, those I speak to with brothers say the same thing. I would imagine a similar thing between all siblings. So I’m not really surprised that Israel and Judah are constantly battling with each other. I appreciate that there is a lot more to this than sibling rivalry. Judah and the other 10 tribes have always had a tenuous relationship. We see the cracks starting to form during the time of David and his ascendancy to the throne. And in Rehoboam and Jeroboam we see the final schism. A schism that was never healed and in the end cost Israel as a whole everything. I am blessed that my brother and I have a good relationship. We lead different lives, but we have a good relationship. But how many siblings have ended up parting ways never to reconciled? And maybe that’s you. What would need to happen for you and your sibling to be reconciled? Stealing the basic plot of 'Our Mother's House' & with dialogue later sampled by Madonna, this dark dream of childhood/adolescence is one of the best British films of the 90's & also the ultimate depiction of how 'Britpop' should have been (a sci-fi lullaby of still life that acts as the cinema equivalent of an early Suede song). During the "hottest summer since 1900" a family of four children, seemingly living on industrial wasteland, lose both parents in quick succession. Rather than risk being taken into care the kids decide to cover mum with concrete & conceal her in a cabinet in the cellar. Despite the occasional squabbles & incestuous desires, this plan seems to be going reasonably well until the eldest sister's new yuppie boyfriend starts asking some awkward questions. In the tradition of 'Peter Pan' or 'The Innocents', 'The Cement Garden' is one of those wish fulfilment 'what if we never grew up' tales that are simultaneously idyllic & deeply unsettling.
