I was ready for a 3-4 days return ride (not including visitation days) with potentially wild camping until I stumble across a 69RMB/pax for day transport cost in private car/van (up to 6 pax). I signed up without any hesitation for sheer convenience. To be able to see the following ancient Silk Road UNESCO Geopark sites in a day would be unreal: 1. West Thousand Buddha 西千佛洞 35km west with 16 caves hidden in the cliff face of the Dang River gorge, ranging from the Northern Wei to the Tang dynasties. Similar style to Mogao Grottoes but virtually empty, so close to Dunhuang and affordable entry of RMB40 includes Mandarin guide. Photos for Western Thousand are limited as its strictly no photo inside the caves but I did steal a single shot. Best part of traveling independently is that sometime you discover one thing while searching for another. We drove past a solar tower power plant, also called the "super mirror power plant", works by using 12,000 mirrors placed on ground around the tower that concentrate the sunlight onto a receiver at the top of a solar tower, which then heats the molten salt inside. Being an early solar energy adopter at my own home, I found that this is known as concentrated solar power, solar thermal energy is believed to be the next generation of solar energy, and an ideal green power source. Today, a dusty museum chronicles some of the site's artefacts, but the real draw is the crumbling beacon tower atop Dundun Hill (墩墩山, Dūndūnshān), where a modern viewing platform offers expansive vistas of the surrounding east end Taklamakan Desert. Yardan Geopark 雅丹地质公园 The weird, eroded desert landscape of Yadan Geopark located 180km northwest, in the middle of the Gobi Desert’s awesome nothingness is where we caught the sunset A former lake bed that eroded in spectacular fashion some 12,000 years ago, the strange rock formations provided the dramatic backdrop to the last scenes of Zhang Yimou’s film Hero, staring Maggie Cheng, Tony Leung and Jet Li. Also known as Yardan Devil City for the bleak desert and horrific howling wind sound. If you care about seeing natural landscape or having an adventurous tip, this is a must-do. 2. Day 22 | Explored Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang Today I followed the footsteps of ancient Silk Road caravans that made the long detour to Mogao to pray 🙏🏽 or give thanks for a safe journey through the treacherous unforgiving desert 🏜️ wastelands to the west. A UNESCO World Heritage site now, the Mogao Grottoes are considered one of the most important collections of Buddhist art in the world. At its peak during the Tang dynasty (~600–900 AD), these caves housed 18 monasteries, more than 1400 monks and nuns, and countless artists, translators and calligraphers. Wealthy traders and important local officials were the primary donors responsible for creating new caves continuously since 366 AD. I booked the more expensive 'A' ticket ¥258 English language tour that gives access to 8 caves; the alternative ¥100 'B' ticket is for Mandarin tours, with access to only 4 caves. Out of the 700+ cavern, you don't get to select the caves (guide picks randomly to space out the crowd) but the big ones will be included in tour. No photos in the cave. I did sneak a few pix and brief clips (upload later), was caught and told off by the security👮but was let off 🤫. All tickets includes transport to the grottoes (10-15km away), access to four museums and admission to two 30-minute films (one on the history of the area and the Silk Road, and one that allows close-up computer-generated views of cave interiors not normally open to visitors, in an IMAX-style theatre at the visitor centre). Understanding the history of area and caves really enhanced my entire visit experience. If u do visit, I would recommend the 'A' tour as the guide opened up 3 sites that were locked for other groups. The 8 caves took 1H 45Mins so it was very extensive. Thereafter, I sneak behind to tail gate another Chinese group for a few more caves. U can wonder around the area but once u get out, u can get back in. Running north from Jiayuguan Fort, this section of the Great Wall is believed to have been first constructed in 1539, though it was reconstructed in 1987. It’s a reasonably energetic 550m hike to see excellent views of the desert, power stations and the distant, glittering snowcapped peaks from the watchtower at the top (which you can climb up). Day 17 | Jiuquan into Jiayuguan Short 22km ride up to Jiayuguan, the town at the Southern edge of Gobi. Although the town was the most western fort and most western edge of Chinese Great Wall, the modern city today is built up when iron ore was discovered here during the Great Leap Forward era of the 50s. When China modernise post 2000, it was converted into a man made Oasis with numerous human created lakes from underwater spring from the Qilian Mountain flanking its southern border. Hard to believe IronMan triathlon races are held here. Had my first Alipay electric scooter experience, a quick way to search for the much needed LuckIn coffee. Thereaffer it was off to the free entrance Jiayuguan Museum that explained a lot about the history and geography of this Oasis. The 15mins ride came up to RMB1 on the local Alipay app 😯 As the sunsets at 805pm, I decided to (bi)cycle 9km out of town to the First beacon tower of the Great Wall of China. Built during the Ming Dynasty of the 15th century, only remnants of it was remaining. The first tower borders a sharp drop off to the deep Gorge of the Taolaihe River. Day 16 | Gaotai over to Jiuquan A longer 153km day so I departed an hour earlier than usual. 20km out, traffic came to a standstill as we watch three long trailer carrying three wind turbines propellers make a 90' turn. Each one took about 5 mins with the turn manouver. It was quite a sight to see these propellers so close and each is about 2.5 lamp post length or estimated about 70-80m length. Not long after the road ascended upward and the sight of snow capped mountain range came into sight and will remain with me for almost 60km. It's the dividing range between Qinghai and Gansu Province. The breathtaking sights was truly uplifting and I reached Qingshui for my lunch break ahead of schedule. I pushed on towards Jiuquan and at the 142km mark I heard 'tak tak tak' and applied my brakes. 5 seconds after coming to standstill by side of road, I heard an explosion. My first (and hopefully last) mechanical issue of this trip. The rear inner tube has exploded and the pressure dislodged the rear tyre from the rims. I am extremely grateful I stopped and wasn't traveling at speed 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽. It wasn't a puncture but the inner tubes had exploded and open up a gap of 6-7 inches. I installed the spares and thank goodness of the electronic pump I brought along saving me the hand pump exercise. Day 13 | Zhangye Big Reclining Buddha Temple Zhangye Grand Buddha Temple was first built ~900 years ago during the Western Xia Dynasty. In 1274, Marco Polo started his journey to the East and passed through Zhangye, was impressed by the Buddhist culture and beautiful architectures, and stayed there for a year. The city has a statue of him at one of the traffic circle at center of town. Asia largest indoor reclining Buddha build in clay with wooden inner structure rest peacefully in this temple on a 1.2-meter-high altar in the center of the hall. To put perspective into the 34.5 meters length, a man could lie on the Buddha's middle finger, while eight people could sit shoulder to shoulder on the Buddha's ear. What excited me most was when I overheard a guide that if u walk behind the reclining Buddha, you will see beautiful but faded frescoes depicting the stories "Journey to the West" carved on the wall 300 years earlier than the book of same name. Day 12 | Yongchang along Hexi Corridor to Shandan | Met cyclist worst nemesis today, lots of wind turbine farm | Journey to the West on Silk Road Rising early today for a big breakfast to equip myself for the climb up along the Hexi Corridor today. but will takes probably a week to pass on bicycle. During ancient Silk Road period, the Hexi Corridor is a critical part acting like a natural bridge for passing caravans connecting Chinese heartland with Central Asia towards Rome. Today, the Corridor has been given a new lease of life with the modern G30 four lane expressway cutting through. I faithfully hug Route G312 criss-crossing the Expressway rising to 2450m (again). The landscape notably begun to change the moment I ride off and up from Yongchang. Vegetation level gradually drops off and dry barren land emerges but the corridor is enveloped by mountain ranges on both sides. The southern end range bordering the Tibetan Plateau. I also learned (later from another touring cyclist) the area was a good breeding ground for horses and sheeps during medieval days of Middle Kingdom and even during Silk Road caravan period. The area today, however, is every cyclist nightmare filled with wind turbine farm, to generate power for Gansu and rest of China. I lost count but there has to be over 60-70 blades around the final 18km of my ascent to the day's highest point at 2450m. What did capture my attention and made my day when I came across two locals bike touring, particularly the Henan based father with his 5️⃣ years old son riding alongside, on his own bike. Needless to say, their mileage is certainly lower but still no mean feat for the young bloke. He was enjoying his fruits along the G312 when I stopped. This must be the youngest touring cyclist I will ever meet. Dad's intention is to traverse the entire Silk Road. After a photo and exchanging Weixin QR, I caught up and rode alongside a 20 year old from the Guangzhou Uni accounting faculty. He has tonnes of questions on Malaysia, our unique ability to speak multiple languages. Day 11 | Gulang to Yongchang | Journey to the West on Silk Road | Tailwind on the road. Headwind with hotel again. Cold 7'C morning so it was a double layer top. Skipped breakfast as the first 45km was plunging down from 2100m to 1550m. That went by in a breeze where I stopped for early brunch by 1030. Road conditions were silky smooth today like what a Malaysian couple about 10 days ahead of me shared. It was an unusual affair as I picked the Wuwei (name of town) 凉粉 (Liángfěn), a cold vegetarian dish served with the local white jelly, shredded cabbage, carrots, sliced bean curd over sesame and peanut sauce with some chilly oil. It was refreshing and tasty, almost salad like really. Another lady took away RMB70 worth. The owner was surprised where I rode from and almost offered the meal but I insisted on the RMB7. During the chat, he said temperature during winter goes -20'C and snows from Oct to Feb around Wuwei. Thanks to the tailwind over the last 30km, I covered 130km today using same time I usually take for 100-110km. Unfortunately it turned tailwind 💨 after I check into my accommodation. As background, I switched to the Chinese only CTrip app for booking accomo as they have a filter for hotels thay accept foreigners. I've been using the English only sister version called Trip.com so far where I encountered two cities where all hotels rejected by stay request. After checking into the first hotel and unloading my stuff in the room, I heard a knock on the door. The manager came up to apologise that I CANNOT stay here. After they reported by check-in, the Public Security Bureau (PSB) notified them to kick me out into one of two places. I explained I booked based on the CTrip app filter to no avail. Reluctantly I left in search for the second place. Fortunately, that went through smoothly although I did get a call after an hour asking me to fill up a form for the PSB. So my lessons for everyone visiting off beaten track areas to be prepared for this inconvenience. Day 10 | Climb out of Yongdeng and descend into Gulang | Cycle Journey to the West on Silk Road Dear Diary, I repeated past mistakes today. Despite knowing a long 1000m grind up to almost 3000m elevation, I skipped breakfast after the massive dinner. Followed Route G312 almost the entire day, a dual carriageway for most of the way with a good shoulder for slower bikes. 20km out from start, the dual carriageway became single carriageway and the open side was better than what ancient Silk Road caravans passed centuries ago, only barely better. Conditions were mixed of hard gravel to treacherous, I was grateful the 35mm Schwalbe Marathon Plus held up. I found a Township for brunch around 1100 before the final summit bid. Noticed the local shop signs also have Tibetan (?). Temples gave way to stupa here although I was fortunate to catch another local Mosque. The descend onto the other side was like a scene from the Lunar surface. The wind picked up too in the afternoon. The north westerly means it's very cold draft. No wonder it snows here as early as October. I saw another touring cyclist near bottom of climb sleeping at side of road, I moved on. Made it to Gulang town, my Plan B stop. At similar elevation to Yongdeng, all the elevation gained was lost. I abandoned my Plan A (to Wuwei another 60-70km lower). Shah-i-Zinda, in Samarkand, is one of the top 3 places we have visited in Uzbekistan and it's absolutely gorgeous! This mausoleum complex was built as a fancy burial place for the super-wealthy nobles of the Timurid era and it's nowadays a pilgrimage site for... Instagram influencers taking cringe photos with the tombs. Avoid peak times for a more enjoyable experience (it can get extremely crowded) and maybe try to be respectful, as this is a religious site, not a fashion shooting location. . This magnificent mausoleum in Samarkand was originally intended for Amir Timur's grandson, Muhammad Shah, but ended up to be the final resting place for both of them (and their family). The only place that probably comes close to this in terms of architectural opulence is the Taj Mahal and that's because it was the Timurid dynasty who built the Taj Mahal, as well. The mausoleum complex was destroyed by repeated earthquakes and neglect, so what is left of it today is just a small, reconstructed part of what it used to be. Even so, it's definitely one of the most impressive buildings I have ever seen! .
