This magnificent mausoleum in Samarkand was originally intended for Amir Timur's grandson, Muhammad Shah, but ended up to be the final resting place for both of them (and their family). The only place that probably comes close to this in terms of architectural opulence is the Taj Mahal and that's because it was the Timurid dynasty who built the Taj Mahal, as well. The mausoleum complex was destroyed by repeated earthquakes and neglect, so what is left of it today is just a small, reconstructed part of what it used to be. Even so, it's definitely one of the most impressive buildings I have ever seen! . You hope when you visit a city called Samarkand that it’s going to be as exotic as it sounds and so far so very good. After a high speed train ride from Tashkent to Samarkand our first stop was the spectacularly stunning and true blue #tamerlanemausoleum. Tamerlane (or Timur) was a renowned ferocious central Asian conqueror with a huge empire during the 1300s. Some countries - like Uzbekistan revere him but others revile him as an unwanted and violent invader - the telling of history is all about perspective.
