Today I published a newsletter on Substack about taking baby steps towards our big visions. In a way, I wrote this newsletter as a reminder to myself to take action towards the visions and dreams I hold, no matter how large or seemingly distant. And I hope the same message will extend to you! As the image reads: Meaningful progress does not require hours of daily effort. I believe so many of us buy into the idea that in order to pursue our goals, whether it’s starting a new business or creating a passion project, we have to have full-time capacity. So when life gets busy and our available hours become limited, we tell ourselves that we don’t have time or space to work on that thing we want to. We say “what’s the point? If I don’t have x amount of hours to work on this, why even try?” This post is about embracing action, no matter how slow, how small or how messy it may seem. Door nr 2. Christmas was a busy time last year. Preparing for our Atlantic crossing and welcoming our children for a week of celebration and family time. We also had a night with storms that wrecked the pontoons and a couple of days with Covid. We visited the Cocora Valley where you can see the truly magnificent Wax palm. It is the World’s largest palm, and it can be up to 60 meters tall (some figures states 70). Its natural habitat is in dense forests of the Andes, at an altitude between 2000 and 3000 meters. The Wax palm towers above the cloud forest canopy and grow much taller than any other tree in the forest. But when you visit Cocora Valley you mainly see single standing palms in a pastured landscape or in small, scattered forests. And even though it’s forbidden by law to take down a wax palm it is threatened by the intensive deforestation due to pasture and avocado growing. The wax palm can live up to 200 years but its seedling take around 50 years to reach the adult stage, and during that time it is absolutely shadow dependant. The individuals you today see standing, solo in the landscape, are therefore incapable of reproducing. Each palm can produce 24 000 fruits every year and they are an important source of food for numerous rare birds and other fauna. The stem of the palm is covered by a layer of wax that can be used to make candles. Latin name is Ceroxylon quindiuense. Colombia is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of palms, with 289 species, 47 are endemic. Colombian coffee is one of the best in the world. And Colombia is the only big producer that grows Coffea arabica beans exclusively. All varieties of the arabica coffee must be grown at a high altitude, and at the same time it must be in a mild and wet climate. But drinking coffee in Colombia is a new thing. As recently as 2012, 90 percent of all coffee consumed in Colombia was imported! That’s because Colombian coffee is so expensive and exclusive and other countries payed much more for the beans than any Colombian company would. It is changing and today roasteries are popping up all over the country and approximately 50 percent of the Colombians drink coffee from time to time, in 2007 that figure was 10 percent. Colombia is close to the equator which means you can grow coffee in a higher altitude than in most other countries. A high altitude makes the beans mature slow. Slow growth means better aroma. The volcanic soil and the frequent rainfalls also contribute to the quality. The rain also means that the beans can’t be dried in the sun and the beans are therefore washed to get rid of the fruit surrounding the beans, before they are roasted. That takes away a lot of the acidity and makes the coffee more smooth and richer in aroma. From Salento you can make many tours to magnificent places. At the town square jeeps await you to take you out in the wild, to a waterfall, a hot spring, a forrest of palm trees, a coffe plantation or to the snow covered mountains in the national parks. But you can also just walk out of your hostel door and go for a walk as we did one day. There are lots of trails just on your doorstep. They are between 1 and 20 kilometres and easy walking. This region is one of the most bio diverse areas in the world. Setting off to sail over 300nm across the Tyrrhenian Sea to Corsica with only light winds forecast we knew it might take us a while to sail there, but we were, for once, in no hurry. When I learned to dive a few months ago I was very scared. But my fear was not for all the living beings we met under the surface. I was afraid of not being able to breathe. But during our second dive I saw a trunkfish for the first time. And for some reason it comforted me. Since then I always look out for them. And almost every time this super cute fish meets us. Trunkfish is in the first picture. Photo number 2 is of a bearded fireworm. Picture no 5 is from one of many coral gardens that we have seen. A method used to safe endangered species of corals. In picture no 7 you should not focus on the blurry fish but instead look at the very spidery crab. Don’t know the name of the fish on picture no 6.
