One of my third grade reading intervention students was “released” this week. After 8 weeks of small group work, he had shown exciting growth on his classroom reading assessments. It is always bittersweet for me to say goodbye to kiddos that I have worked closely with. Let’s talk small groups!! Last year, I saw an idea from @fallingfor1st and I loved the way she organized her small groups! I went off of her idea, and put my own spin on it! Let me tell you, my students eat this up!! Not only does this system help me stay completely organized for my small groups, it also allows the students to track their own learning! They keep track of their reading levels on a data tracking sheet I use, and they love seeing their levels grow throughout the year! They are full of excitement when they “move up” to the next level!! (Reading levels A/B=Butterfly; they move up to a Duckling once they reach a level C/D, etc.) This system allows me to plan my small group time accordingly, while providing each student the support that they need! Looking for a fun way to practice decoding skills? Why not use sticky hands?! I used the skill-based flashcards my students had been decoding previously. I placed the cards in the middle of a circle and students used the sticky hands to “catch” their words, and decode them fluently. You can always change your cards based on the skill your groups are working on. I purchased these sticky hands off of Amazon in bulk. Our preparing for prep program is starting in term 1, 2023! It will run weekly on a Thurs mornings at 10am in Brunswick and it’s suitable for kids enrolled in 4 year old kinder (the year before starting school). It is designed to support receptive and expressive language, social skills, early literacy and all the important school readiness aspects for little learners to feel confident and ready for school. The program includes: - detailed case history with each child’s parent/caregiver and goal setting for the term (session over Telehealth) - Therapy planning time for each child - 6 group therapy sessions (each 1.5 hour duration) - Parent feedback session (via Telehealth) - Summary report at the conclusion of the term Places are filling up! There will be limited numbers available to keep it intimate. I’m looking forward to be running this one together with a wonderful primary school teacher during term 1! B U Z Z E R S✨ I was in a small group the other day and asked the students to put a thumbs up when they were ready to answer a comprehension question.❓ Then my brain went “oh my goodness” what if my students had buzzers to answer questions like on a game show? How engaging would that be? 🧠 So I went to good ole Amazon and they actually had them! 🙌🏽 We tried them for the first time today and the students absolutely had a blast! 😆 Here is how I structured using them with my students in a small group: ✨ Pose a question for students to answer. ✨ Give them think time to prepare their response (in small group I give them 4 seconds). ✨ Count down from 4 and let them buzz in to answer. ✨ I always hold students accountable for answering in a complete sentences by providing stems/ frames. This is absolutely one of my BIGGEST pet peeves in education. The line between intervention and test prep should be clear, and all too often it isn't. Too often interventions don't even begin until October, and the whole system comes to a complete shut down with nearly a month left of school. THIS. IS. NOT. OKAY. While test prep has a place...it is not intervention. Intervention is designed to target knowledge and skill gaps needed for long-term academic success. Working through test passages every week is not an intervention. If a campus's only concern is readiness for state testing, it's time to approach the data from a new lens and begin to identify what students are really missing and how to best address those needs. I called my friend after school one day to talk progress monitoring. During the conversation she told me that she knew a teacher that never progressed monitored in the school district she has taught before. I couldn't believe my ears!!👂🏼 I think of progress monitoring like going to the doctor when you are expecting a baby.👶🏼 In fact, I went weekly with my last pregnancy the whole 9 months because I was I was high risk. Not going to the doctor would be like just guessing that you and your baby are healthy and fine, without really knowing.👨🏼⚕️ Same with progress monitoring. I would be just guessing what is best for my students. Progress monitoring is a huge part of my instructional plan. Phonics Plus Programs We have decided to introduce small group sessions at Fremantle Speech Pathology Services this year - targeting reading and spelling; they are called “Phonics Plus Programs” and are perfect for children aged from pre-primary through to Year 6 who are struggling with literacy learning. The sessions will run for an hour a week (or more often if required) and groups will comprise of either 2 or 3 children. We're transitioning from digraphs to blends. I get a lot of teaching opportunities out of this simple chart. 1. The little yellow marks provide a visual to remind kids that digraphs make one sound and that blends each make their own sound. We work on chunking out the words, figuring out the blend first then the rest of the word. (Before reading, I have them identify all the blends on the chart. We underline the blend then under that I add two lines to show two sounds as we make the sounds together.) 2. I also model starting the sentence again if I need to stop to sound out a word. This helps with the "flow" of reading. 3. After each sentence, we talk about the meaning and I ask them what hey are visualizing.
