Being organized is the key to having a happy classroom, IMO. When you can find what you need quickly your students don't have a ton of downtime. This is good because we all know if you fail to plan, your students will come up with a plan, and you may not like it 🤣 I use these bins every day to organize materials. I keep anything that my small group might need inside, including decodable readers, sight word practice, student writing notebooks, and whiteboards and markers. With everything in one place, it is so easy to get my small literacy groups started right away! Have you ever wondered if you need a vowel valley sound wall in your classroom? 🤷🏽♀️ Well, the answer is YES! Making reading tangible for students has always been my goal. These posters give children a visual representation of how we form vowels with our mouths. The vowel wall goes great with decodable lessons that focus on one phonics skill at a time. Once my students have worked on a vowel sound I have them think of a word with that vowel sound and we add it to the wall! For the long vowel sounds, you can also add vowel team words that make those sounds. The idea is to give children a visual that is manageable to use. Best investment this year. Every afternoon right after lunch we have down time for 20-30 minutes. During that time it allows my para and I to eat our lunch, reset our room, bathroom the kids, and get set up for the afternoon session. Oh my goodness 😍 So alongside our ‘Pig the Pug’ literacy unit we will also be exploring this book! It got delivered yesterday and I have had a flick through this evening. Such a humorous, beautifully illustrated book that I just know will be met with lots of giggles from my class. As part of our literacy unit we will be researching pets, and creating fact files. I definitely don’t read every book in my classroom library. There is no way I could manage to do that. I do, however, do a lot of research about the books I add. I try to make sure that I have books that mirror the students in my classroom, books about a variety of topics and genres, and books of differing levels. I find great recommendations from @pragmaticmom on her blog. The biggest reason I like to read books that I will add to my classroom library is so I can recommend books to students. I can take guesses with books I haven’t read, but being able to successfully match a student with a book is a magical thing and it’s way easier to do so when I’ve read the book. Literacy has become a huge passion of mine since collaborating with a colleague last year on types of /r/. -When we include movement (sensory) into our speech sounds and keep teaching explicit, sequential content, magic happens. We can't raise readers and writers without teaching them phonological awareness skills. That's because sounds and their differences matter and words are made up SO many moveable parts and symbols! Do we walk in hiking chews and eat high-heeled shoes? Nope. So somewhere out there, students are karate chopping and train-horn tooting as they ch-ch-chose their sounds, meanings and symbols. More literacy stations! Click the bookmark to save the post for when you need ideas. Sorting by initial sound is a group I was working with. This is such an important skill to develop early on. Small group instruction with an adult is needed for some little ones. (TPT link in my profile) I add stations like dominoes to give them a brain break as well as work on problem solving and fine motor. There are some advanced sounds in the Melissa and Doug puzzle, but it still provides great interactions with connecting initial and final sounds. I add CVC cards to stations like the play dough stampers for students who want to make words but aren't independent yet. I am simple.
