Magenta has been in the hospital all week. Highs and lows, hope and disappointment. We have no answers yet, but we are trying to remain optimistic. When we went to see her the second day, we were allowed back into the kennel area. Aside from being impressed by the facility and staff, my focus was on one of the diagnosis’s on her chart. Anorexia . In dogs the diagnosis simply means refusal to eat. Unlike the human version , there is no psychological component to the disease, but damn. I used to feel that my aversion to having children came from my fear of my body changing. I’m sure that’s part of it, but I think I was afraid of passing down this demon. I have wrote this so many times trying to find the right words - I’ve had a few grieving mums on different platforms reach out to me recently asking for advice or commenting on my strength. I remember reading posts in the days, weeks and early months of losing Jack and thinking where the hell have they found the strength from, I will never feel like that, feeling absolutely hopeless, lonely and defeated. But after receiving messages from those mums I’ve realised for me it’s important to keep talking, keep showing my progress in this ‘new normal’ and talk about the bad days too. I’ve seen a lot of posts of parents feel as time goes on and as everyone else’s life moves on, that it becomes more difficult to have conversations about your baby or memories, purely because they feel people won’t want to here about it anymore or encase someone is afraid of upsetting that bereaved parent. I know I’ve felt like that myself, but the reality is, at least as I speak for myself, I want to talk about Jack. I will always be grieving, that will never leave me, but you will never upset me, instead you will make me smile and I will be filled with pride that you’ve thought of him or used his name and want to talk about him 🥰 , I will be happy to tell you about his little button nose, dark wavy hair, his big feet, hands you could hold forever and the softest skin I’ve ever felt. “I feel like I’m failing” something I’ve said many times as a mother, and that I’ve heard from other mothers themselves. But here’s the thing. We learn so much more from the failures that we ever do from our success. And most of the time when you feel like you’re failing it’s a world away from that. It’s the opposite in fact. You’re doing an incredible job despite the challenges being thrown your way. Sometimes it’s just hard. Having children takes the predictability element away, from pregnancy, giving birth, to raising babies and then children. Things happen that are outside of our control and our little humans have their own unique personality and that can be both wonderful and exhausting at times. But what you do need from the moment you see that line pop up on that pregnancy test. Is the “me too” moments of solidarity. you don’t have to love every moment and you shouldn’t have to hide your feelings. And one of the things that helps in parenthood is talking, to people that get it, that are right there with you; in the trenches of postpartum sleep deprivation and teething, who not only support you in your challenges but celebrate your little wins, and know how important they are ❤️ So this week, and every other for that matter. Talk and keep talking, talk to friends & family, to other mums. When you’re not in the right headspace you may want to retreat and isolate yourself. But don’t let you mind fool you, thoughts aren’t facts. Your health matters too Mama. And if you know things really aren’t right, as often we do, reach out ❤️🩹 #maternalmentalhealthweek

Today is World Maternal Mental Health Day The first 4 photos I was posting the first few weeks after having Evie, but the next 2 are photos I took when I was home alone. Tom sent me the picture of the board after a tearful lunchtime phone call when he was working from the office. Mental health problems are the most common complication of pregnancy and the postnatal period (1 in 5) Yet there is far less investment and attention compared to physical conditions like gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia I received great support from my midwifes, health visitors, infant bonding teams and feeding consultants, but I believe this was because I was so vocal about how I was feeling, and repeatedly asked for help. I know other new mums struggle through not realising help and support is available. @mmhalliance are asking MPs to ensure mental health is sensitivity discussed at every antenatal and postnatal appointment. Please share to ensure new mums get the support they need

So I was stuck in traffic in east London going through a construction area. I was not having a good day and one of the workers shouted over to me and had a chat, like he knew I was struggling. That was so hard for me to A. Talk back to someone I don’t know and B that he took the time to cheer me up even though he doesn’t know me. Good people do exist and while I know he won’t see this I’m grateful for his small act of kindness that for me was a huge thing. For those that remember, I took a job out of desperation in north and east London a month back. The north part I can cope with but the east!!!! OMG this is not my idea of fun. So last week I interviewed for a job working directly for a local, next borough over, council and today I found out that I got the job 🙌🙌😊😊. I will never again work east London as long as I have a hole in my bum 😁😁 The best part is that I feel so good about myself and that I’m better than I thought I was, damned imposter syndrome!!! Let’s spend the day being positive and admiring ourselves, myself included, and accept that what I see of me isn’t what I am. I did. He was right but I hadn't even realised it. My 3 year old knew that I wasn't ok before I did. When my mum expressed her concerns about my mental health after he so matter of factly told her this, it hit me like a bolt of lightning. I'd put my sadness, anger, frustration, despondency, flatness and avoidance down to having twin toddlers during lockdown. I'd put it down to being a teacher during lockdown. I'd put it down to loneliness during lockdown. I'd put it down to my husband working full time in his job then working his socks off to improve our house for our children during lockdown. I'd put it down to not being as cut out to be a mother as I thought I would or should be. What I hadn't put it down to was Anxiety Disorder and PTSD following a buried traumatic birth that I couldn't talk about. I'd kept going when I shouldn't have because I was oblivious to the fact I needed help. I hadn't realised there was more going on. My friends did. My mum did. My sisters did. My husband did. My 3 year old twins did. But it took one comment to hit home, "My mummy cries all the time." To him this was his normal and I knew I didn't want it to be. I knew I needed to change this for him and for me. Therapy saved me from myself and my darkness. My 3 year old saved me. So keep reaching out. Keep making the effort.
