The Windsor Totem Pole 🇨🇦 The Windsor Totem Pole in The Great Park was gifted to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by the Government of British Columbia to mark the centenary of that Province in 1958. At the request of Her Majesty, the Pole was erected in Windsor Great Park by the Royal Engineers that year, and has stood for over 60 years as a lasting reminder of the links and friendship between Canada and the United Kingdom. The Totem Pole has now reached the end of its natural lifespan. Like its sister Pole, the Centennial Pole in Vancouver, which was lowered in 2018, this Totem Pole will now be lowered. The next stage of the Totem Poles existence is for it to be laid to rest and for it to slowly deteriorate and decay. This decision has been reached after careful consideration and discussion with Chief Mungo Martin's family. It has been agreed that as the Pole was gifted to Her Majesty the Queen and has spent its life in Windsor Great Park, it is appropriate and right that the Pole is laid down at a location in The Great Park, where it will remain an attraction for many years to come... In advance of its lowering. The Totem Pole has been blessed by Hereditary Chief David Mungo Knox, great-grandson of the Pole's creator, Chief Mungo Martin. The Pole, with all appropriate ceremonies, will be lowered during 2024. Final picture, taken in 2018 with a bluer sky; and the colours and condition are noticably better. Totem Pole Park is one of those oddities that you just can’t help but stop and see what it is all about. It is a four-mile detour off of Route 66, but it is worth it. The main attraction is the “World’s Largest Concrete Totem Pole” standing at 90 feet tall. It was built between 1937 and 1948 by Ed Galloway. There are many different influences in the design on the totem pole which includes 200 carved pictures of Native American figures and various animals. There are other totem poles and figures throughout the park as well as an eleven-sided building, “The Fiddle House”, that contains the museum of Galloway’s fiddles as well as the gift shop. Kake’s 132-foot Totem Pole | Alaska tallest! According to Alaska.org “the totem was commissioned by the city of Kake in 1967 and carved in Haines out of one Cedar tree. The city had two ideas in mind when commissioning the impressive piece. First, it commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Alaska purchase. Second, raising the totem served as a symbolic healing necessary after the cutting and burning of Kake’s traditional totems in 1912.
