This post is a bit overdue; but as you know from the past few posts, I spent several days in Soulsville last week. I love Memphis; and each time I visit, I love it a little bit more. This trip was special: I had the opportunity to take Johnny5 to the Stax Museum of American Soul. And I was all up in my feels—from the moment the tour intro movie ended. (“It’s like thunder, lightning | The way you love me is frightenin’ | Oh you better knock, knock, knock on wood”) Besides sharing a few trip pics, some of my favorite Stax/Volt albums, and my love for all things Stax, this post has two purposes: 1) To share the May 20th date for the new HBO series, “Stax: Soulsville USA.” I’m super excited for this series to hit HBO streaming. 2) To spread the word about the Soulsville Foundation (fundraising link included). The foundation supports—not only the preservation of music history—but the future of soul through The Stax Music Academy. MSA is an after-school and summer music institute that “provides intensive, industry-centric music education combined with unique performance opportunities and creative youth development programming.” The academy has been fostering and supporting new artists in the tradition for more than two decades. This foundation has been on my Top 5 Giving Tuesday list for a few years now—and I am proud supporter of music education in underrepresented areas. Especially, Memphis. So please consider supporting this organization too. I’ll end here with liner notes, titled The History of the Memphis Sound, preaching undisputed truth: “Memphis will always be known as the home of Soul. But the fact that it was also the home to a number of diverse musical styles makes it a city like no other. Did you know that 300 albums and 900 singles were released on @staxrecords and its affiliate labels? @the40acremule took a walk thru the Hall of Records at @staxmuseum -where the walls are lined with floor-to-ceiling cases containing all of the albums and singles released by Stax and its subsidiary labels from 1957 – 1975. And from there they had a Super Fly experience! Where they were able to see Isaac Hayes’ glittering custom Cadillac Eldorado, which was purchased as part of his renegotiated deal with Stax in 1972. The car, which was purchased for $26,000 (or, $143,000 in 2013 dollars), is fully equipped with unique amenities like a refrigerated mini-bar, television, 24-carat gold exterior trim and white fur carpeting on the floorboards. Our tour of @staxmuseum continues! An important factor in @staxrecords success was the studio itself. The recording studio, located at 926 E McLemore Ave in Memphis, was a converted movie theater, which still had the sloped floor where the seats had once been. Because the room was imbalanced, it created an acoustic anomaly that was audible on recordings, often giving them a big, deep yet raw sound. @the40acremule had the opportunity to explore Studio A and the Stax control room. This hallowed ground contains period recording equipment in the control room, and an exact replica of Studio A!
