So I have an odd relationship with Rolling Realms from @stonemaiergames @jameystegmaier I bought it over a year ago but it didn’t click for me because I’m don’t like sharpies so I sold it. Pero al retirar una de fuerza 4 tendremos que hibernar y perdemos un trabajador. Juego de combos y evolución muy entretenido, he podido jugar dos partidas y las dos han sido enfocadas de manera muy distancia, ya que hay una gran variabilidad tanto de cartas como de naves y abejas con habilidades asimétricas, también hay un buen puñado de losetas diferentes. Quizá el tema no me ha llegado a atrapar ni verlo más allá de las naves-abeja. Por lo demás, me falla la tematización. Tapestry by @stonemaiergames was what we went for after Alice is Missing! Four civilisations, the Mystics, the Treasure Hunters, the Recyclers and the Utilitarians grew and expanded over four eras! The Mystics began by exploiting their people whilst the Recyclers were quick to broadcast their democratic ways with their TV station to the rest of the world! As the eras progressed there was an alliance between the Recyclers and the Treasure Hunters before they had a marriage of states. The Utilitarians meanwhile conquered the Mystics on the central island before the down trodden people of the Mystics revolted and upturned both their Utilitarian and Recycler oppressors (brainwashed people I say!). The Utilitarians continued their warring ways until finally they turned their attention to inventing new technologies. In their final era, the Treasure Hunters sought rewards in the stars and travelled into outer space in search of riches, as the Recyclers entered their Steam Tycoon era and became a technological wonder and winning the game! Yes another Wyrmspan post 😁 As Wingspan is a family favourite here I was really curious to see how Wyrmspan would play. When reading the rulebook you see a lot of similarities with Wingspan so if you already know Wingspan you'll learn this game in no time. In Wyrmspan you need to excavate caves and lure dragons to those caves. These caves can then be explored for resources, dragon- and cave cards and other bonuses. Sounds a lot like Wingspan? Indeed but still it plays differently. First of all there is no action to gain eggs. You'll need to gain them by excavating caves, enticing dragons and exploring. Wyrmspan also plays over 4 rounds but instead of placing action cubes you pay a coin to do an action. Each round you get 6 coins and there are ways to earn more or to spend more on your turn so players will not take the same amount of turns in a round. After all players have passed end of round scoring is done and the next round starts. Another addition is the guild board which is a rondel that you can advance on and gains bonuses. Each time you've completed a half cirkel you can place a cube for extra bonuses or points. There are 4 build boards with different bonuses that come with the game. It is not often that I will post up several "look I got a new game" posts in one week and yet.... After a lot of rigamarole, delays and messing about Wyrmspan has finally arrived at my house and I am super keen to play it. It took me several efforts to fall for the charms of Wingspan but I am hoping that this box full of Dragons will lair in my heart soon enough! I have only had the chance to flick through the book of dragons inside briefly and I think it's going to be a hit. Pages crammed full of grumpy or friendly or wicked or cute looking critters with well ncrafted names peered back at me and I couldn't help but smile. Tomorrow or the weekend. Scythe (2016) - I got a really nice deal with this Stonemaier classic and bought a used copy for 40€! A steal if you ask me 🤩. The components are top notch, the art and hilarious encounter cards are also a nice touch. We have a few games under our belt so far and first impressions are quite good. We don’t mind that there is not so much combat as one would expect from a game with mechs. It still gives you anticipation whether there will be a combat or not in the next turn. The gameplay also plays fast and isn’t that hard to teach. The combats are also fun, because players can bluff with their combat cards and power they will use. One thing we didn’t like in our 2 player game was that there wasn’t much need gfor conflicts or a chance of conflict at all, so it was more or less just a race to finish the game first, so we just performed optimal moves on our boards and finished in 45minutes. But this is less likely to happen in games with more players, as there will be more combats and tighter map. Also some combinations of starting factions and player boards are OP (offically confirmed) and you need to check when dealing them to the players. Two weeks until National Board Game Day, WOOHOO! In celebration of this I had to pull out a special game, Tapestry by @stonemaiergames designed by @jameystegmaier - this is a 1-5 player game for ages 12+ and takes between 90-120mins to play. Each player is a blossoming civilisation which they will develop through three eras. Each turn players can do one of two things, develop their civilisation or move into the next era. Developing is simple, choose one of the 4 tracks (Science, Technology, Exploration or Military) and progress your marker there if you have the prerequisite in resource and then gain the benefit. When a player moves into a new era, they gain income, points and most importantly get to activate their unique civilisation ability and play a tapestry card which tells the story of your civilisation. Highest points win at the end of the game! It’s that simple to play but it is a fun challenge to unpick. Great thing is, military doesn’t feel bad, and that’s refreshing for a map based game. For me Tapestry works best if players vocalise their narrative, otherwise it can feel just like moving cubes around the board. If done well, you finish the game with wonderful stories of the rise and fall of nations who move through interesting eras of development. I should say Plans and Ploys is a great expansion which I think adds to the game positively. I struggled with today's theme of 🥚 EGGS 🥚 for #thematicthursday (created by @boardgameoverlord). Game Night! Tonight we played “Viticulture” designed by @jameystegmaier and Alan Stone and published by Stonemaier Games. We each took control of a personal winery using the seasons to plant vines, upgrade our equipment and cellars, hire workers and visitor, harvest grapes to make wine to sell and create a wine empire. So tonight we played Expeditions from Stonemaier games #stonemaier which is a sequel to the game Scythe. We like Scythe so much and heard this was better at a lower player count than Scythe that we recently splurged and opted for Ironclad edition which includes metal mechs. We’ve always wanted Scythe’s metal mechs, but they’re just too expensive. So how is the game? The game is good but for us at least even at two players Scythe is definitely the better game. For us, one thing we really like about Scythe is the fact that, the game can be very multiplayer solitaire, which while some people don’t like, we do. In fact usually the only interaction we have in Scythe is control of the Factory in the middle, which really makes the game an efficiency puzzle for us. I also missed the moving a cube from top to bottom like in Scythe, because I love that endorphin hit. Before we ever played Scythe, we had played My Little Scythe, which I think helped a lot to understand Scythe when we first played. Expeditions despite being similar to Scythe, took a while for me to get a good grasp of the game. There are a lot of terminology to learn (Vaquish, gain, control, etc) and it just took a while for it to click. There are aspects of Expeditions I really did like over Scythe: the exploration and the modularity of the tiles, games layouts will not be similar, which I think will add to the replayability, not to mention the variability that comes with corruption on tiles, which I also liked. The art of course is great, very similar to the art in Scythe, and the production is great as expected from Stonemaier games. HOWEVER, we did have a small problem that turned into a bigger problem. The game comes with bases to attach to the mechs to be associated with a player’s color. The bases do not fit well, and are frequently trying to come off. One time while trying to push her mech (the boat, Odin’s Wrath) into the base a piece broke off the boat (compare pictures 4 and 5). While not a huge deal, it is disappointing to spend a lot of money to have something break during the first play. Overall the game was good, but just can’t really reach the levels of Scythe. #boardgames #stonemaiergames

In the uk, today is Mother’s Day, so in celebration I thought I’d share Wingspan by @stonemaiergames @jameystegmaier - (Eggs and Mother birds…you get the link!). 1-5 players aged 10+ play over 40-70 mins to attract birds into their wildlife preserve. Each turn players can either, play bird cards onto their boards, gather food (custom dice) from the bird feeder, lay eggs on bird cards or draw more cards. Whatever they choose, the play may activate the abilities on their bird cards, something making great chain reactions! It’s a competitive, medium weight game, the competitiveness comes out most when the food you wanted has gone from the bird feeder! I’ve pimped my copy of the game (you’ll see that’s a bit of a theme with me!) with a wooden bird feeder, a nest to hold the eggs, bespoke food resources and little bird houses to represent the action tokens! It’s a beautiful game with a theme that’s unlikely to offend anyone and definitely one that would be good for National Board Game Day! There are so many meaty decisions to be made and several paths to victory—and it all ties together with a lovely theme. I pulled this game out today, thinking I had played it solo previously. As I was re-learning the game (it has been a while), I realized I had forgotten almost everything. What I will say is that, as far as Stonemaier game automas go, this one confused me a bit more than others. It’s possible that I’ve just been spoiled by Expeditions and Apiary, but this one felt fiddlier—not hard, mind you. Just a little harder. I’m 80% sure I figured it out, but I’m not sure I comprehended the bonus actions correctly. IT’S OKAY THOUGH EVERYTHING IS FINE. Also I lost. Thank gods it’s First Impressions Friday again! This hashtag was created by the inimitable Kay of @kay_plays_games. This week I was able to play WYRMSPAN by Stonemaier Games, sort of a reimagining of the awesome Wingspan. Dave of @gamefoundry brought his deluxe version of the game, and he 3D printed the awesome dragon egg first player marker - check out his etsy store in the future! I hadn’t ordered Wyrmspan because I wanted to see how it differed from Wingspan. The designer is Connie Vogelmann, who designed the terrific new game Apiary. Wingspan designer Elizabeth Hargrave is credited as a developer. There are many similarities between the games. Players draft cards and pay resources to put dragons (instead of birds) into a tableau of three habitats. There are dragon eggs, end of round goals, and engine building. The art is gorgeous (artist Clementine Campardou) and the deluxe components and the eggs were beautiful. It’s a fairly easy game to teach anyone who knows how to play Wingspan. There are important differences. There are no objective cards in Wyrmspan and no dice used for food production. Players must excavate a cave to make room for a dragon, playing a cave card for a one time benefit. Dragons have a variety of powers, some instant bonuses, some end game scoring. Each player also has an Explorer that she uses to trigger dragon abilities. There is also a dragon’s guild that players can use to get special abilities or end game scoring points. Wingspan’s action cubes are replaced with coins, which are used to take actions but also sometimes must pay for a dragon. A big difference is that players can gain more coins in a round, or bank coins to take additional actions in future rounds. There is a LOT to like about Wyrmspan. It looks beautiful and has more flexibility in gaining/using resources. The explorer is a cool addition. But the game often dragged, especially in later rounds when players took explore actions. I’m sure it didn’t help that we played with 5 players, one of whom is prone to AP. Would I play Wyrmspan again? Absolutely. Will I buy Wyrmspan? No. I still prefer Wingspan, but some with whom I played preferred the dragons.

So it’s been storming a lot here and my power ended up going out last week for a few hours. I grabbed a reading light and Viticulture and settled at my table with a bowl of chex mix for dinner since I realized that all of my normal meal food needs electricity 😅😅 i play games pretty fast, and I continued to play for a while after the power came back, but by the time I had gone to bed, I played viticulture 10 times 🥰🥰 I had a blast and beat my previous high score of 31 twice by getting 35 and 39 by the end of the night! I haven't discussed my personal/professional life on this account much - as the handle implies, I'm a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina where I do private practice and also work at one of the state's universities. This past week I leaned into my day job quite a bit and presented at the American College Counseling Association national conference in Orlando, Florida! My colleague and I presented on our Embedded Services at NC State University, where I work primarily with students, staff, and faculty in two colleges. Honing in on specific colleges allows me to make mental health services more accessible, and the integration into the academic programs allows for the reduction of mental health stigma. Autumn came along for the trip and along with the conference we were also able to get in a few games (same new to us!). The big hits of the weekend were The White Castle, Apiary, and Race to the Raft! Rory has a tendency to take three plays before realizes how much she enjoys a game. I can predict almost exactly what she’s going to say about any new game for the first three plays and it’s absolutely hilarious every single time. First play: she’s overly critical about what she notices and compares it a lot to other games we’ve played. Second play: “ooohhh I see how that’s working” type of comments and mild eating of words with “okay that makes more sense now” musings. Then, when she comes over again, usually the next time whether or not we play that game, she’ll say something like “I’ve been percolating and I think I actually do really like that game,” to which I say “I know.” After the third play, she confirms that she does really enjoy the game and then it gets added to our rotations 😂 Yes, this is exactly how the process of learning Apiary went. I’m really excited to get more multiplayer games in this year! Jako kdyby velcí technici a inženýři v meziválečné Evropě šňupali více kokainu… a nafty.⛽ Svět deskové hry Scythe, odehrávající se v alternativní historii po První světové válce, se před vámi otevírá jako mechanická květina a vypouští vůni výfukových plynů a čerstvě pohnojených polí. To vše vycházejících z ilustrací polského umělce Jakuba Rózalskiho, brilantně kombinující malebnost východoevropských vesniček s obrovskými válečnými mechy. Hra Scythe z roku 2015 je v základu pro 1-5 hráčů. Hra je plná dřevěných i plastových komponentů a karet a kombinuje celou řadu mechanik, přes worker-placement, area control a engine building až po tajné úkoly. Přesto jsou jednotlivé mechaniky jednoduché na uchopení a pravidla jsou dobře napsána. Ačkoli jsou ve hře přítomny figurky postav a bojových mechů, hra není primárně válečná hra! Ano, soubojový systém tady je, ale je spíše doplňkový a velmi situační. Naopak ve většině případů je rozumné se boji vyhnout a někdy za celou hru nedojde k jedinému střetu. Boj je asi nejslabší součástí Scythe, a pokud by někoho hra zaujala s vidinou válčení obřích mechů, byla by to veliká chyba. Scythe je ve svém srdci solidní „euro-game“, kde jde o nasbírání nejvíce bodů (ačkoli tady jsou místo bodů peníze) pomocí ovládání co nejvíc území, sbíráním surovin a popularitou mezi obyvateli vámi ovládaného území. Nejdůležitější je pak počet „hvězdiček“ – úspěchů, kterých ve hře dosahujete. Hráč, který získá svou šestou hvězdičku, tím zároveň ukončí celou hru.⭐ I když to možná není dokonalá hra, Scythe zbožňujeme! Ano, souboj je slabý. Ano, pravidla pro pohyb figurek přes řeku jsou otravná a postrádající veškerou logiku. Ale když vidíte, jak se vaše deska hráče každým kolem zlepšuje a vaše akce jsou efektivnější… Když neumístíte během svého tahu jen jednu hvězdu, ale třeba dvě nebo tři a tím ukončíte hru… To je něco, při čem vám ani nevadí ruské a polské nadávky protihráčů, kteří chtěli odehrát ještě alespoň jedno kolo a trochu moc se vcítili do svých frakcí.
