Comando G ‘Las Umbrías’ 2017 Insane. 65 plus year old Grenache vines on granite soil planted at 1000m above sea level. Had this around two years back, and it was quite peaky and a little less integrated. That has all changed: that menthol on the nose, strawberry palate, incredible lightness. 🚀🚀🚀

La vie est facétieuse, on me dépose aujourd’hui ces trois bouteilles du ‘Clos des Constellations’ dont la calligraphie rappelle furieusement ‘Le petit Prince’. En l’état, le blanc, Persée, se livre infiniment moins que les femmes de l’autre hémisphère, le rosé, Pégase, un rien ennuyeux, concerne davantage leur mari, mais je me pâme devant le regard profond du rouge, Orion. Ce vin, aux antipodes (désolé…) des blouges dont je me régale, me serre puissamment dans ses bras comme une fille du Sud. Comme toi quand je pleurais. Du grenache noir à 80%, riche mais fin, caressant, désirable. Jus issu d’un immense terroir, Lesquerde, une île granitique dans la montagne du Fenouillèdes, ce trésor occitan des Pyrénées-Orientales. Je l’aurais bu comme je pense à nous, délicatement mais violemment. Las, il ne restait qu’un verre ou deux dans la bouteille. Wine: @dunewine the Empty Quarter 2022 Region: McLaren Vale Grape: GSM Price: $26 I could use the excuse that we have brought the reds out due the cold weather, but who needs a season to decide the style, drink red and white all year long I say. Love red blend here from McLaren Vale, really well balanced with red fruits and great acidity, there is some lovely tannin there from a really small amount of Touriga Nacional. This is awesome value at $26 for a wine that has had some huge reviews from critics and it also gets my tick of approval, great wine that is super approachable.

Serendipity occurs when you least expect. Last week during a challenging moment, a wine rep randomly stopped in with a bottle to sample. He said it made him think of us. Then I saw the name: Sindicat La Figuera! It is a wine from Catalonia, in northeast Spain. More than the name, that part of the world is special for us. So, let's talk about La Figuera. "The Fig Tree", an apt name for a small town high up in the mountains above Priorat. One of the driest parts of the country growing short, scrubby old vine Garnatxa, as it is spelled in Catalan. A "sindicat" of six winegrowers collaborated years ago to produce this wine to remind the world at one time, this part of DO Montsant was highly respected, before bad weather decimated the local wine industry, leaving vineyards abandoned. Many years later, this group gathered for a common cause (that being the very definition of a syndicate), and created this wine. Pulled from vines upward of 80 years old, this Garnacha is fermented using native yeasts from the high, arid air. It is then aged in underground cement tanks until bottling. Free of oak influence, the wine offers a lifted, clean and fresh expression from one of the most challenging places to grow grapes. Here are tasting notes on the wine.
