701. The Extensions - "I Want to Know"/"My Need" 45, 1963. Can't dig up any info about the Extensions because stupid-ass Google thinks I'm searching for hair extension tutorials, but that's okay. This seems to be the only 45 the Extensions ever released along with an inclusion on 1963's Only for Teenagers & Real Swinging Adults compilation, so I guess their musical career didn't extend very far. I got bad jokes early today, but they end once the needle hits the vinyl. Not sure how I would rate the Extensions compared to other early '60s girl groups, but "I Want to Know" ought to be remembered more fondly than just being relegated to obscurity. I'm also not sure if the songwriters had any idea how much "I Want to Know" resembles first-generation ska, but some early Trojan group would've had an absolute field day covering the song for Jamaican listeners. Really good, criminally underrated tune with a lead vocalist that could really belt it out if she wants to & fine background harmonies that put the Extensions right up there with many of your favorite Sixties girl groups that scored big hits on Motown & Smash Records. "My Need" makes me wonder if everything I said about the Extensions as a girl group is completely wrong since all I am hearing here are male vocals & such instead. I don't know what to make of all this, but "My Need" is still a good tune with fine doo wop harmonizing just the way we liked it in the Steel City back in the day. Putting out the call to any obscurist fans of old 45s to chime in with whatever info they have about the Extensions, but both songs are really good & deserve so much more recognition than what music history has apparently given them.

REPOST: 82. Jimmy McHugh - "Do the Kangaroo"/"I Don't Want Everything" 45, year unknown. There are two pressings each of this 45 on both the Hunch & Success labels; this is the first pressing on Success. Not much is known about Jimmy McHugh at all & I'm doubtful that this is the same person who was credited with writing over 500 songs between the 1920s & the 1950s for artists like Chet Baker, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, among others. That Jimmy McHugh was a composer while this one actually sings. I don't know if the Kangaroo was ever a dance craze back in the '50s or '60s, but "Do the Kangaroo" seems like it is geared in the direction of trying to get the kids of America dancing with one foot up & one foot down. "I Don't Want Everything" appears to have been an old favorite back in the Steel City, as it's been included on one of Porky Chedwick's compilations as well as another one titled Pittsburgh's Favorite Oldies. This one is right up Porky's alley too, as he loved his doo wop a whole lot & specialized in playing obscure 45s like this on his radio show. I like to think that he would've prefaced this song with one of his wacky raps about how Jimmy McHugh & "I Don't Want Everything" would RULE FOREVER, in which the rebellious 'Yinzburgh' youth would've gone running to the nearest record store to buy their own copy to listen to at home. Good times.

Happy birthday to Jamaican producer Rupie Edwards! The drum and bass on Rupie’s early 70’s output is hard as nails and in my humble opinion stands out from other labels of the time!
