Dzisiaj kontynuowałem zwiedzanie Samarkandy. Odwiedziłem kilka ciekawych miejsc, ale jedno z nich wywarło na mnie tak kolosalne wrażenie, że poświęcę mu cały osobny post. Tym miejscem jest nekropolia Shah-i-Zinda. Jest to niesamowite miejsce o niezwykle długiej historii. Pierwsze grobowce powstały tu już w VIII wieku, ostatnie w XIX. W wielu z nich pochowano postaci bardzo zasłużone dla imperium Timura lub jego krewnych (choćby jedną z żon). Ilość pięknie zdobionych grobowców w tym miejscu rzuca na kolana, nie ma dwóch takich samych, a każdym można się zachwycać bez końca. Obok Registanu to właśnie to miejsce było dla mnie najważniejszym punktem na mapie tego przepięknego miasta, ale efekt przerósł nawet moje bardzo wygórowane oczekiwania. The city of Sebastia which is located around 10 km northwest of Nablus, is one of the significant archaeological sites in Palestine, with a long history that goes back to ancient times. It was a regional capital during the second Iron Age, and a major urban centre during the Hellenistic-Roman period. It is also one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Palestine. Christian and Islamic traditions place the tomb of John the Baptist there. Among the must-see ruins are: a colonnaded street with 600 columns, a basilica, a forum, a theatre, a temple for Augustus, a stadium, an aqueduct, and cemeteries. The present town of Sabastyia, including the archaeological remains, the historical town, and the cultural landscape, is a major tourist attraction in Palestine. A series of restoration activities was carried out in the historic core, including renovation of the mosque, the shrine of NabiYahyia, the Cathedral of John the Baptist, the Roman mausoleum, the olive press, Kayed palace, and the traditional buildings, along with a walking trail. Gūr-e Amīr Mausoleum marks the final resting place of Timur (Tamerlane), along with two sons and two grandsons. One of the most significant architectural ensembles of medieval East, the Gūr-e Amīr was built in the southwestern part of Samarkand at the beginning of the XV century. This majestic complex consisted of a khanaka, the madrasah of Muhammad Sultan - grandson of Amir Timur, and, later, the tombs. Although Amir Timur prepared a mausoleum for himself in his native Shakhrisabz, it was Gur Emir that became his tomb when he died in the winter of 1405. Timur’s gravestone is made of a single piece of jade and is located in the center of the tomb. Typical of megalomaniacs, the tomb is inscribed with a warning that read “when I rise from the dead, the world shall tremble”, and “whomsoever opens my tomb shall unleash an invader even more terrible than myself” is inscribed in his coffin. His grave is located below, in the mausoleum basement. A fine example of medieval architectural craftsmanship, Gur Emir was a prototype for famous samples of architecture of the Great Mughal: Humayun Mausoleum in Delhi and the Taj Mahal in Agra, built by Timur descendants, who ruled northern India.
