One of my favorite end of year activities is to have my students design their own math board games during the last two weeks of school. We start off by planning out game logistics and hone our How To writing skills by writing our game instructions. The game must involve a math skill we learned this year like basic facts or 2 or 3 digit addition or subtraction. Sometimes students are adventurous and decide to make geometry or telling time games too. Students decide their game name and/or theme, the number of players, how players move (dice, spinner, cards), how to set up & play, and how to win. Once their instructions are written, we use card stock to create game boards. Some kids prefer 1 piece, but many like it to fold up like a real game board, so we tape the back side with masking tape and put a tiny bit of clear tape on the front to keep the two pieces from separating. We review our ruler skills and map out our game boards in pencil first. Some students like to use color tiles to trace or verify their game spaces are big enough for players’ game pieces. I model making my own game board too and emphasize taking my time, neatness, and including places to put game cards. Students can then move on to coloring their boards. Many enjoy markers, but I really love using Crayola Twistables colored pencils. We also use Sharpies to outline our game boards. When all the color is added, students can make their game pieces and supplies. I pre-cut index cards in half for students that want game cards. We use colored transparent counters for game pieces and foam cubes to create dice. I usually put the counters and foam cubes on my beginning of the year Amazon wish list since I let students keep their games and supplies to play at home over the summer. You can also easily make a spinner with an index card, brass fastener, and paperclip. All games are stored in gallon size ziploc bags. On the last day of school the students get to take turns playing their games with their friends. I love this activity so much because it is so fun, but also still educational during those last few weeks. Let me know if you try it with your class!

Yes! It is absolutely possible to foster a love of reading and books in all children including a child with dyslexia. Young children are naturally curious about the world and finding books that reflect their interests helps. Also, when a young child sees family members reading regularly, they are naturally inclined to follow suit. (Even though reading a book on your Kindle app on your phone is reading, I suggest making a point of reading a physical book whenever possible around young children). Teachers don’t deserve summer break. Teachers deserve summer break 𝒂𝒏𝒅 your support. They have spent months, weeks, days, hours, minutes this school year supporting your child. Loving them. Caring for them. And in a way that only a teacher can… Teaching them. Not just how to read or write or multiply. But how to use manners, be kind, think critically, and giggle at the smallest things. Teachers have waited countless times for a late bus to finally arrive. Opened car doors in the pouring rain at the car rider line. Cleaned up spills. Tied shoes. Wiped tears. Gave hugs. They take work home with them at night and on their sick days “off” of work. They lose sleep over their students’ needs. Teachers pray for certain students that don’t get the care or attention they deserve at home. Sometimes teachers cry, too. Even when they know tomorrow they’ll be back in class together. Safe, cared for, loved. Teachers only have a short amount of time left with their class this school year. They already miss the little family they’ve built. Even the students that gave them a hard time. Because they are family at the end of the day. And they sure have made some good memories in the short amount of time they’ve had together. Teachers hope their students’ next teacher will love them even more than they do now. (If it’s possible.) Teachers don’t deserve summer break.
