Two Ariels to go for #1Perso12Bounds! This one didn't really turn out like I'd imagined in my head, but there's no time to rework so we just run with it. Because, well, I've come down with the cold that got my mom on Christmas evening... she scrambled to put on a mask as soon as she felt off, but I guess it was too late. 😖 This means cancelling my scheduled climbs, postponing the first board game night in 4 years (what's another week after we've waited all this time), and hoping the 2 movies I was going to see in the next few days are still shown once I'm feeling better. But you know what? I have a warm home to recover in. Food to nourish me. Access to medicine & herbs to ease symptoms. I also have access to internet & a computer to sign petitions and write officials to keep demanding a ceasefire. I couldn't let #mermay end without an Ariel bound. I had plans for a different look, but after my mom gave me this dress for my birthday yesterday, I knew I had to do a take on Ariel's pink dress. As I'm waiting for my flight back home from the DR I wanted to post and say Happy The Little Mermaid Weekend 🧜♀️!!! With the timing of my trip I just had to do a lil swim fit in honour of Ariel 💜💚🤩 The little girl in me who used to go on waterslides tummy down to pretend I'm swimming through the water like a mermaid is screaming inside!!!!!!!!!! The eighteen year old in me who got her first big tattoo for Ariel is also screaming!!!!!!! This is not at ALL the look I'd originally wanted for Ariel, but after searching for a few specific pieces since February (🙃), yesterday I gave up & changed course. This was the result. For my first #autisticallydisney bound, I decided to go with Ariel. The Little Mermaid is also the movie for this month's #Disneypinupcalendar, hosted by @cyberwaif_hrh and @curiouser_in_wonderland, and so I decided to give my look a pinup flair. The Little Mermaid was first introduced through Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale by the same name. Like many of Andersen's characters, the little mermaid was different from others of her kind. He described her as, "... a strange child, quiet and thoughtful." Instead of delighting in shipwreck finds like her sisters, she was intensely interested in her red flowers, a marble statue of a young prince, and eventually, the surface. In some ways, the tale itself can be read as a metaphor for the autistic struggle to fit in. The little mermaid sacrifices the things that make her beautiful and unique, her voice and her tail, so that she can try to fit into the surface world. However, her plan backfires. The legs that have replaced her tail are excruciatingly painful to walk on, much like autistic masking can be physically and emotionally draining. Despite her best efforts to please the prince, she is still an outsider and cannot win his heart. Disney's Ariel differs from Andersen's little mermaid in some ways, but she still is portrayed as different, both from the other mermaids as well as from humans. She has an intense interest in the surface that at times becomes all-consuming, she doesn't really socialize with the other mermaids, and she has trouble picking up on surface social norms. Unlike Anderson's little mermaid, though, Ariel is largely accepted as she is. Even when she transforms back into a mermaid, Eric doesn't stop caring about her.
