I've had the honor of practicing in studios in various states and in Europe, but this place here is special. It is sacred. It is community. It is a place where bodies of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and ages leave their obligations and worries at the door, roll out their mats, breath together, and connect with both their highest good and one another. Home. Sociology holds the idea of a "third place;" somewhere that you spend a lot of time (that isn't home or the workplace), connect with others, and find a deep sense of community. I believe a third place is a missing piece in our busy lives where people tend to hustle between home, work, and the occasional social visit. We need that third place to settle. To feel safe. Although the data and statistics given only extended to the late 90s, I feel like my understanding of social capital has skyrocketed. Not only that, but I am so invested and fascinated by the concept of it that I plan to dive even deeper. (If you have book recs on this topic, drop em in the comments pls) I would highly recommend reading Bowling Alone, if you're like me and you long for deeper community involvement. Putnam does a fantastic job sharing information on possible reasons for the down-trend of in-person interactions. (And no, it's not just because of the rise of the internet!) The way he relayed the data was easy to follow and easy to understand, which can be a challenge to accomplish in a book as thick as this one. Highly recommend. Specifically, how important it is for folks of all walks of life to stand around, outside, by water, not doing much except waiting for fish to bite. These kinds of places expose many of us to people we'd never otherwise be around. And fishing (I'm assuming this because I have exactly zero fishing experience) gives them an easy topic to chat about. Bonus is that fishing-folk are literally often the eyes and ears of changing fish and marine wildlife populations, water patterns and quality, and a myriad of other things that inside-folks don't necessarily see. Being a witness to other humans and "more-than-humans" ( <---I LOVE THIS PHRASE and am stealing it) - can lead to collective action. It also can lead to an outward flow of care, from caring about oneself and one's hobby to caring about the one's fellow-fisher-folk and one's fellow-fish.
