Another fab #memoryof22 - with regrets for not having posted about this before: the #degreeshow of @anitachaudhuri, who completed her #ma in #photojournalismandocumentary at @lcclondon at @unioftheartslondon last November. Thanks for inviting me. I enjoyed seeing her series #migraineland in all its intriguing glory - we spoke about it as it was being created but I think I semi-understood it. I liked the sound of her manipulation of images to express the experience of #migraines. So it was great to see examples of the final results (and would have been even better to see the series in its entirety). I liked its almost #trippy, heightened colours - which I imagine represent the intensity of pain felt and perhaps an altered state (although not that kind!). I like the way some of the #handcoloured photographs were pitted or appeared punctured as if to convey #throbbingpain. The concise text near the image was educational as I learnt about the four stages of migraines. And I quote: ‘The flickery triggers and vertigo of the #prodrome beginning phase, through to aura, headache and finally to #postdrome or resolution’. It’s been a pleasure to meet Anita at the freelance writers’ group we were once part of (although we’ve since left the fold!) Beginning with ‘The Birthday Party’ (2007), Speers hosts an imagined celebration, in which young children singularly, dressed in costume, confront the camera. A muted palette of greys and whites invert expectations of a children’s party, resulting in a peculiar, almost apocalyptic encounter. Another day, another walk along a Boulder trail and another soul in solitude, which is the subject I was looking to photograph these last few weeks. Those whose photo I wanted to take made me feel their solitude. But not in any unhappy way. This fellow, for example, looked supremely content to me. And looking at his photo I’m reminded how comfortable and comforting solitude can be. This is how photography can help to steer the ship.
