Try lighting your fire like this - especially if it is a bit colder outside. This way, as the kindling lights it helps to quickly warm your flue/liner and create the draw that is need for an efficient fire. Top-down fires typically produce less smoke, and they burn brightly from the beginning. We place a couple of kiln dried logs on the bottom and then build a 'Jenga' tower of kindling, using one or two flamers firelighters to get things going. I took a little nap laying on my warm earthen floor basking in the warmth from my masonry heater. Mainly I enjoy the bit of correction this provides in my back and neck. But, opening my eyes I saw the graceful curves of this very loved heater and once again saw just how amazing it is. The soft curves, the sharp lines both contrasting and enhancing each other. Not sure why I didn't think of this before. I tested with very wet wood that had been sitting under our deck on the ground in the mud for a year figuring if that worked then dry wood would really go. Eleven years ago I came across a 'revolutionary' way of lighting fires in a woodstove. It has changed fundamentally the way I start fires in the stove. For over decade prior I did the standard practice of building up a fire from paper and smaller pieces, to larger and larger pieces of wood...constantly checking to see when the right moment was to plunk an ever larger piece in, and hopefully not extinguish the smaller fire with the big addition. Well, I'll never go back to that. Here is the premise of the top-down fire: Place the largest pieces, 3 or more, in first! Place them in such a way as to create a little nook for the next layer of paper and kindling to snuggle in on top. The idea is that we are creating a small fire that will send hot coals down into the waiting cracks of the big logs, and set them ablaze. No more plonking big logs on, hoping to hit the right moment, and not crush the little fire. You can fill the stove with a goodly bit of big wood, then light the little fire on top and walk away! Remember to create a good kindling fire, in order to create enough coals to burn into the logs below. Starting a fire from the top down, after reading a Norwegian book on wood and fires. Up to now I’ve always put kindling at the bottom, largest at the top. This is the opposite and it does work. Lighting a fire is simple isn’t it? You put a load of kindling at the bottom and then stick a couple of logs on top and away you go. Well no, scientists in Norway (where they take fire lighting very seriously) wanted to find ways to reduce smoke pollution at start up and get stoves up to temperature more quickly. They came up with the top down method. You place a couple of logs at the bottom of the stove and stack your kindling on top, like a tower. The kindling quickly produces a strong flame, this reduces smoke and particulates and gets a good draw of air into the stove. As the kindling burns it drops onto the logs below and they light. First time low and slow cooking a rolled brisket. Over indirect heat for 7 hours, on a cheap barrel grill, with no meat thermometer. Home made rub using Maldon sea salt, black and pink peppercorns, nigella seeds, paprika, cayenne pepper and fennel seeds. First 4 hours open and spritzed with a mix of water, cider vinegar and Worcester Sauce every 45 minutes. Last 3 hours wrapped in foil. Then left to rest for an hour. Served with roasted sweet potato wedges and a mango, pepper, cucumber and avocado salsa. To be honest it was overdone, an hour less on the heat would have made it less fragile. Great bark, nice pink smoke ring but a fraction dry. It fell apart while slicing so I turned it into pulled brisket in skinny bagels. It was spicy and smokey in all the best ways.
