My fitness and stamina are down on a couple of years ago, so carrying half my body weight in overnight kit 10k and climbing a munro was very intimidating. But I did it, and I'm so glad I did. 💚

After a rainy night at the mountaineer campsite, we waited for the tent to dry out before setting off towards Cherokee, where the south end of the Blue Ridge Parkway is accessible. The road was spectacularly curvy and twisty following the river all the way as it twisted and turned as much as us. At times crossing under us and popping up on the opposite side of the road. The scenery was so interesting with lots of birds, the beauty of the river keeping us mesmerised, well me at least as Stace did the steering up front. Up and up we went, just a beautiful days riding that I didn’t want to end. The man who owned the campsite advised us before leaving that sometimes you see Elk crossing the river at around 5pm every day. I was sad that we would miss this as we were arriving at lunchtime to the place he described and neither of us had seen Elk before. However as we rounded a corner just before arriving into Cherokee there was a large expanse of grassland, we could see people stopped, taking photos and sure enough it was a small herd of Elk! How exciting Stace pulled over so we could get a closer look and take some photos, they were certainly bigger than I imagined and felt so lucky to see them at the edge of the road. Time for lunch in the very small interesting town of Cherokee, just a few craft shops and one sandwich type shop that was super busy and looked like the obvious place for lunch. We sat outside watching the world go by and got talking to a lovely family who were also waiting for their sandwiches. We had a great chat with them and explained all about our trip. They were so interested on what we are doing and gave them one of our stickers! They also helped with some advice about getting onto the ridgeway as the section at Cherokee was closed. Luckily the next entrance not too many miles down the road was open, so we could get on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Embracing the rain. As my hiking buddy and I arrive at our meeting point for today’s walk, the heavens opened up. As the saying goes “it’s not bad weather just bad clothing .“ Just as well we were prepared. Our walk today took us through a beautiful trail past tall pines with their branches hanging downwards with the weight of all the rain, rows of vineyards with leaves the colours of yellow, orange and red. The pine needles soften our path as we pass highland cows and a very funny horse full of character. I think he liked my orange raincoat The rain cleared and gave us delightful views out to The Nobbies. A lovely covered shelter greets us halfway, a perfect spot for a picnic lunch before heading back the way we came. Want to know what it’s like to hike with me? Let’s take yesterday, the goal was to walk to Sanatorium Lake and up to the Camels Hump at Mt Macedon, about 9 k’s. I’m not a hiker that walks A to B and ✅ . It’s what happens along the trail which is so special. The people you meet, the sight you see, is where I’m at. We walked to the lake and stood in the quietness looking at the reflections. The trees reaching from the sky down across the water. If you want to quieten your brain, this is the place. Before getting back into the car to drive to our starting point , one of the girls flagged down a couple of Rangers, they happily stopped and took pics for us. We had watched them earlier picking up papers. A job they shouldn’t have the need to do. Arriving at Days Picnic Area and longing for a cuppa before setting off on our hike. A few treats, all for nourishment of course. As we packed up, a car pulled alongside us and two men got out, one with a small basket. Are you foraging I say, and the answer was yes. Before we know it we were looking for mushrooms with them. We listened intently to what one had to say. But we were here to hike so wishing them a full basket, off we went. Hiking through the bush, the older trees are amazing. The leaves making a colourful carpet for us to walk on. We looked into dark holes for wombats, saw the square wombats poo but alas no wombats. We walked inside the heart of trees that had been burnt through, amazingly still standing with their strong roots. A lesson from nature for us perhaps! Continues in comments ⬇️
In the afternoon of our second day we had our third and final tour, one of the most exciting. We had to catch a bus, taking us to the other end of the caves to the furthest section which had around 100 stairs to get down to the lowest part of this tour but it was so worth it to see the epic frozen Niagara. This section of caves had the most amazing limestone formations and certainly nothing like either of us had seen before. It was hard to capture in photos or film just how large these formations were but they were extremely beautiful. There was so much to see and we both could have done more tours if our budget allowed. It left such an impression that I have been recommending it as a place to visit to all the people we have met on the road since. The visitor centre had a really interesting museum, which I explored on our third day while Stace did the route planning for the next week of our journey. Second day in Mammoth caves. Today was a short bus ride to enter an entrance in the middle section of the caves. We entered via a lift and that was pretty cool in itself. Assured that the lift was safe but had been known to get stuck on occasion and told If this happened we would have a fairly long walk via another exit, luckily the lift decided to be kind to us! Our Park Ranger was very charismatic and full of interesting stories about graffiti on the walls dating back to the 1800’s! He showed us some of the cave crickets and explained about bats and glass looking spiders if you were lucky enough to see them. This section was very different from the large open caves that we were in on the previous day. These were oval shaped having amazing echoes, as well as beautiful limestone flowers on the walls. The Ranger was not so popular, making some of the children of the other visitors cry, when he turned the lights out and made us jump when he stamped his foot in the dark 😂 #rtw #bmw #adventure #getoutsideanddostuff #sayyesmore

The Galapagos Postman Challenge 2024 Charity Page Why I’m Doing The Challenge I’m on a mission to reconnect the world one letter at a time. In 2024 I’ll collect 30+ letters from an ancient post box on Isla Floreana in the Galapagos Islands and deliver them by hand across the globe for the next 12 months. I’ll be doing to raise awareness of the challenges people with MND face in travelling and communicating. An inspiration for this challenge came from my father Eric who suffered from MND and passed away in 2022 after battling the disease for over 8 years. The TGP is about reconnecting people via the written word in the form of letters and hand delivering them to provide a personal touch. And to highlight the loss of mobility and freedom of movement that my father and other MMD suffers lose. Something we shouldn’t take for granted. I’ve set a target of $100,000 NZD. The first night in Nashville in a hotel was bit of a treat as we have been trying to camp as much as we can now. Although cities can prove to be difficult to find places to camp, plus we were only in this amazing city for two nights, so it was worth it. We caught an Uber into the city in the evening, grabbing some dinner before we went looking for a bar. Nashville looked an interesting city and not too big. I should imagine a nice city to explore during the day. However we had to get some planning done for our trip to Mammoth caves and over the Appalacians coming up during the day. But the nightlife did not disappoint, we went to Robert’s Western World which was a very lively bar with some fantastic live singers. We had a great time enjoying some drinks and watching a lady play the violin like we’d never seen played, she was amazing. It was such a great atmosphere and we noticed such a mixture of young and old all having fun together and not something you see so often. It was brilliant people watching and seeing some dancing along to the blue grass tunes! We caught up on laundry and admin, then our second night into the city was to Martins bbq joint. We looked up this place for some good food, having had some bbq a few times now across the US and not all had been great but this was superb and the bbq was done really well. The meat on my ribs just fell off the bone and the bbq sauce was really delicious and not too salty! We got to enjoy this with some more live music a bit more serene then the lively music from the previous evening. Having been to some zoos and aquariums that are very much about conservation and protecting the species and education and we think done in the right way these places can exist but this sadly did not feel like that at all. Aquarium’s are usually quiet, calm places to explore this was more like Disney on steroids! Admittedly it was Spring Break and therefore exceptionally busy but the entrance to this place was overwhelming and so loud with way too much going on! Although seeing some of the amazing fish were really beautiful and many different kinds. There was an education element but not enough in our personal view and certainly not enough about helping the species for its survival. Yes The Reluctant Pilgrim is back (RP)! We are planning a fabulous adventure together this year and for RP it will be the longest walk with me yet. A few years ago I asked him “the year we have our 50th wedding anniversary would he walk a Camino with me”. He agreed with a smirk not imaging the time would come and wouldn’t you know it, that year has come, and he can’t renege on his promise. With our accomodation and routes planned we are now starting the fun stuff, training. So you may see a little more of him over my shoulder in the coming months. We will be walking later in the year the Chemin Le Puy other names are Via Podiensis and GR65. We will set out from Le Puy en Velay in France and walk down to Saint Jean Pied de Port over the Pyrenees onto Roncesvalles in Spain. We will also walk a variant from the trail called The Cele Variant. Approximately 900k’s in total. I have been to Le Puy en Velay before when I walked the Robert Louis Stevenson Trail GR70 . The start of this Camino is leaving Le Puy en Velay Cathedral and is supposed to be one of the most amazing experiences on any Camino. I know I will have chills as I walk down the stairs of the Cathedral through an opening from the Cathedral floor and look out to the horizon in front of me and the adventure ahead.
Honestly, did you know it’s forty and not fourty? I just googled it, and corrected all the days haha. Anyways…I tried my best to make this a “yes” vacation. We had some breakdowns (even in the middle of the hiking trail), and some fits, lots of big family deep breaths, but when you throw routine out the door and spend lots of time outside with no naps, it’s bound to happen. We had a lot of firsts, and a lot of “that was so fun!” moments for each of us. We also had chill fireside nights interrupted by 6 year old with an upset tummy from all the hills and poor food choices and a toddler refusing to sleep in a new bed that wasn’t hers. Overall, it was fantastic. Chill, chaotic occasionally, relaxing and adventurous. I hope my littles feel the same when they think back on this trip years from now. My last session lakeside didn’t go as uninterrupted as I wanted, but it was perfect all the same. I’ve relearned to let it roll, to let them be curious and to slow down more. I learned that when I first brought them home, but in the routine of everyday life I forgot that. Really feel that we are starting to get into the swing of setting up camp ! It has taken awhile to get used to setting everything up from the bike and then if only staying one night, putting everything back the next morning can be exhausting so when we have the opportunity to spend two nights or more at a campsite it really gives us a chance to catch up with ourselves, take a breath and enjoy our surroundings! Arriving at Red State Park was particularly beautiful and we didn’t hesitate to stay extra nights. We had planned to visit the Aquarium over in the city in the next day or so, but first setting up camp! I’m feeling more confident each time we pitch up, I can virtually put the tent up on my own now, whilst Stace sets up the hammock, then I get to work on dinner. Having a custom made kitchen roll that contains all the utensils we need along with a small chopping board and items needed for washing up, plus having a frying pan, a saucepan and a kettle with a small stove makes cooking outside a pleasure. I love to start chopping up what veg we have picked up on route, then deciding what to cook for dinner. Getting as imaginative as we can with a small spice bag and we have some dried veg and onions. We either put it together with some pasta or rice or adding to some of the tent camp meals, we currently have a few of Italian inspired cous cous. These meals are delicious and with added veg or tin of tuna or sausages the meal is plenty for two. I really like cooking on the little stove now and although quite nervous of fire with practice it’s actually not as scary as when I first started out with it! The campsite had a beautiful lake and with staying more than one night it gives us a chance to explore and have a walk around and then relax in the hammock in the sunshine and catch up with some admin such as our posts for socials or planning our next route. #rtw #bmw #overlandtravel #bmwoverload #getoutside #getoutsideanddostuff #roundtheworld #sayyesmore
