Whimbrel Seawatch! from Tortuguero during my recent trip to Costa Rica organised by @napurula.travel. Much misunderstood as a mechanism of generating power using air movements and popular in The Netherlands in the early 20th century, this is actually a smaller relative of the Curlew! 🇬🇧Whimbrel 🇪🇸zarapito trinador Numenius phaeopus P.S. please feel free to share and save and if you have a moment or two I’d be incredibly grateful if you could please let me know what you think of my other posts #whimbrel #tortugueronationalpark #costarica #costaricawildlife #costaricabirds #wildlifephotography #birdphotography #nature #natura #pájaros #wildlife #wildlifeplanet #naturephotography #animals #animalsofinstagram #animal #naturelover #your_best_birds #zarapitotrinador #costarica #waderbirds #1x #1ukshot #eosr8 #sigmacontemporary #freshbreezeclub #fbpc_birds

#insectos #tortugueronationalpark #bmwriders #adventure #visitcostarica #puravidacostarica #nikonphotography #costarica #beautifuldestinations #bestplacestogo #limóncostarica #nikonphoto #lovecaribbean #insects_of_our_world #insects

We’ve been replacing and repairing our infrastructure over the past few years because the station has been aging and growing, and we thought it might be time to reflect on where we started. These photos are the VERY early days of the Station, when Marilyn Cole and Ozzie Teichner first found and purchased the property. The early accommodation, storage and kitchen/dining room speak to simpler times, and much has changed over the years. Despite the physical changes, we still work hard to honour Marilyn’s original dream, a station where scientists can learn more about the ecosystems we have the privilege to study. The station has been a labour of love for COTERC for 33 years, with many dedicated people supporting its creation and evolution. While a number of the supporters who helped in the early days have now passed on, we still remember and appreciate them for their work. Thank you to everyone who comes here or supports us from afar - we are where we are today and continue to grow, because of you! #history #love #cañopalma #cañopalmabiologicalstation #Tortuguero #tortugueronationalpark #costarica #conservation #research

The slaty-tailed trogon is distinctive in its family, for it’s orange bill and eye-ring. The males’ back, head and chest are metallic green, whereas the females are dark grey. Both have an eye-catching red belly, which really make them stand out as they forage in the Station garden. They feast on fruits and insects – and they can often be seen close to the white-faced capuchins, catching insects that flee the monkeys’ movements. Thank you to Leó Dewez and Manuel Arias for the photos of this garden gem :) #Tortuguero #tortugueronationalpark #cañopalma #cañopalmabiologicalstation #costarica #birdsofcostarica

New, improved and open for business! This week we put the finishing touches on the re-built library. We had to raise it a little higher and replace the wooden flooring, because of flood waters creeping ever higher over the last couple of years. With more windows, we have a brighter and airier space than before, perfect for working on research projects, and presentations when we have larger groups on base. A massive thank you to Manuel Arias and León Solis for their hard work in getting this together, and to León for the photos of his handiwork :) #research #conservation #cañopalma #cañopalmabiologicalstation #costarica #tortugueronationalpark #tortuguero #internlife

🦀 Introducing the ghost crab from the shores of Tortuguero! We've encountered many of these quick and quirky critters during our beach explorations. 🏝️They're incredibly swift and will scurry away from you in the blink of an eye, often ducking into their burrows in the sand. Don't miss the last video all the way through — it captures the lightning-fast dash of these crabs in action. ✨ #GhostCrab #Tortuguero #CostaRica #BeachLife #NatureSpeedster #tortugueronationalpark

#naturaleza #nature #naturephotography #photography #travel #landscape #fotografia #naturelovers #photooftheday #natura #photo #paisaje #flowers #travelphotography #picoftheday #wildlife #costarica #tortugueronationalpark #guacamaya #greatgreenmacaw #guacamayaverdelimón

Lisa Favard has been leading teams on otter surveys for the past couple of months, as she collects data for her internship. Close to completing her Masters at Universidad Católica de Louvain, in Belgium, Lisa has been with us since early February. While otters is her main project, Lisa has been involved in all of the research we do, gaining new field skills and will be completing the set this week, with her first turtle night patrols. A great team member and leader, we're really enjoying her time here and are grateful for conscientious data collection and hard work! The white-lipped peccary herds we sometimes encounter on our mammal surveys, can be quite breathtaking, with between 50 and 200 individuals. Mostly frugivorous, they play a key role as seed dispersers. While they're not as glamorous a research target as the carnivorous cats that prey upon them, these seed dispersers helps to maintain a healthy habitat for the diverse range of species. Having a stronger bite than their collared peccary cousins, they can crack open (and disperse) different seeds in the same territory. Listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, the Wildlife Conservation Society believes them to be at greater risk due to habitat loss for livestock, diseases transmitted by domestic animals, and illegal hunting in it's Mesoamerican range. These shots were captured by trail cameras on our survey transect. #wildlifeinthewild #cañopalma #cañopalmabiologicalstation #tortuguero #tortugueronationalpark #costarica #mammalsofcostarica

Food for thought... Primates can play a really important role as seed dispersers in their environment, facilitating forest regneration and improving the forest health. A 2022 study in Brazil, by Barbara Araújo Conçalves et al, showed that capuchins living close to humans who fed them directly or indirectly (by leaving food accessible), ate to 57.5% of their food from the human sources. This is something that not only can affect the health of the monkeys, but by reducing their role as seed dispersers, has an impact on the entire ecosystem. When we travel we can reduce our own negative impact by making informed choices about where we stay, how we dispose of our own food and by prioritizing respect for wildlife in the wild, over staged "cute" photos. A massive thank you to Leó Dewez for sharing photos of capuchins with a wild diet and wild attitude :) #wildlifeinthewild #responsibletravel #responsiblephotography #research #conservation #tortuguero #tortugueronationalpark #costarica #cañopalma #cañopalmabiologicalstation #monkey

The great tinamou lays it's shiny blue eggs on the ground on top of brown leaf litter, which you'd think would make them an easy target for predators. The males however are quite diligent in their role of egg incubator, and they have been observed to cover the eggs with leaves when they leave to feed. The females mate with multiple males, and males will take care of several females' eggs. They are then responsible for raising the chicks until they're independent. The American anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) is one of the strangest bird species I have observed in my life. This aquatic bird has a long neck which give him the nickname “snake bird”. Like cormorants, anhingas lack uropygial glands, which waterproof the wings of most other aquatic bird species. They are therefore often observed drying their wings in the sun. #anhinga #tortuguero #tortugueronationalpark #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdsofcostarica🇨🇷 #wildlifephotography #birdsofinstagram

...also on the bat survey (yes, I assume you're following all of our posts!), Eline Mariano spotted this Micrurus alleni (Allen's Coral snake). When Manuel bent down to capture it for measuring on base, they realised that it was eating an eel. While data is important, we avoid catching snakes who are eating or have just eaten, in appreciation of the effort that goes into the hunt. Life at Caño Palma never ceases to amaze... Today's tent-making bat survey brought back this sighting, and while I couldn't investigate it straight away, 11 hours later I believe it to be lampyridae, or firefly larvae at brunch! Having now looked at many pictures of lampyridae and lycidae (net-winged beetle) larvae, the prey is the key. While the two larvae are similar in appearance, firefly larvae are well known for eating snails, while the net-winged beetle larvae are known more for consuming nectar and honeydew (although some do apparently dabble in carnivory). The larvae inject venom into the snails to weaken them - and while this is all a bit gruesome, even the most ardent snail lover has to appreciate the incredible strength on display in this photo. Thanks to Manuel Arias for capturing this action shot :) #carnivory #snail #firefly #costarica #tortuguero #cañopalma #wildlifeinthewild #tortugueronationalpark #cañopalmabiologicalstation
