Unfortunately, this led to a severe side effect known as avascular necrosis, where the bone tissue dies due to lack of blood supply. This condition severely affected both of his hips. Our first step was a core decompression with bone allograft augmented with BMAC stem cells on the right to attempt to save the less affected hip (precollapse), followed by a hip replacement on the left side (had already collapsed). Despite our best efforts, the right hip eventually progressed and also required a total hip arthroplasty. I was finally able to watch a procedure that is near and dear to my heart yesterday. I was able to watch a total hip replacement be done by our amazing surgical team led by Dr. Mark Engen, on a 5 yo golden retriever. It was so interesting watching the procedure I’ve had done 3 times (total hip, partial revision, full revision) be completed on one of our patients. It was surprising to me how small the prosthetic itself is for a dog that size. But, it makes sense. I’ve just only ever seen my prosthetic. I can attest, that barring any major complications, that dog’s quality of life will be greatly improved. I just wanted to drop you both a note thanking you and your teams for the work you did, and updating you on my progress. Last week I won a gold medal at the UK BJJ (Brazilian Jiujitsu) National Masters. I registered for this just prior to my operation as a motivator to recovery. to be honest, I was not sure if it would even have been possible, but it did serve as a milestone for recovery and a great motivator. In the end I one the Masters Light weight (-76kg), something I would have been proud of before my operation, and which now feels even more significant, although simply competing would have been an achievement. More now than ever I am realizing that it is good to strip things down to the fundamentals. Understanding your landscape, prioritizing what is most important and staying consistent. And while it’s true for all of the areas of our life, it is particularly true in thinking about exercise. This is the time we really have to make a concerted effort to squeeze in a new walk, take on a new exercise, dust off the old treadmill, or turn the TV to an exercise channel. Bij de afdeling Orthopedie kun je als eigenaar meekijken met de operatie van je huisdier en erbij zijn als ze bijkomen in de recovery. De eigenaren op de foto hebben niet alleen mee gekeken, maar ook mee gevoeld. Ze hebben allebei een stukje bot cement in hun handen. Jestem absolwentem Wydziału Lekarskiego Collegium Medicum Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie. Szkolenie rezydenckie odbywałem w Oddziale Klinicznym Ortopedii i Rehabilitacji SU oraz Oddziale Klinicznym Ortopedii i Traumatologii NSSU w Krakowie pod kierownictwem prof. Artura Gądka. Państwowy Egzamin Specjalizacyjny zdałem w październiku 2021r. uzyskując tytuł specjalisty w dziedzinie Ortopedii i Traumatologii Narządu Ruchu. Obecnie pracuję na stanowisku starszego asystenta w OK Ortopedii i Traumatologii NSSU w Krakowie. W swojej pracy zajmuję się diagnostyką oraz leczeniem schorzeń i urazów narządu ruchu. Moim głównym polem zainteresowań są choroby stawu biodrowego i kolanowego. Przeprowadzam zabiegi naprawcze i rekonstrukcyjne w zakresie kończyny dolnej, zabiegi z zakresu chirurgii urazowej oraz sportowej. Poza macierzystym ośrodkiem, swoje umiejętności zdobywałem podczas wieloletniej pracy w Centrum Urazowym Medycyny Ratunkowej i Katastrof oraz Oddziale Ratunkowym Szpitala Uniwersyteckiego w Krakowie. Wiedzę i umiejętności stale poszerzam poprzez uczestnictwo w licznych stażach i kursach w kraju i za granicą. Po zakończeniu szkolenia rezydenckiego odbyłem półroczny staż w zakresie chirurgii zachowawczej stawu biodrowego w Oddziale Chirurgii Biodra w Dexeus Hospital w Barcelonie pod kierownictwem dr Manuela Ribasa.
