"It was spring when I arrived, and the famous Korean cherry blossom festivals were beginning all over the peninsula. My first trip out of town was down south to the coastal city of Jinhae where one of the most famous of them is held. Jinhae, or Chinhae, is also the site of the main US naval base in South Korea, so the place was swarming with drifters. On the bus down, a woman who spoke a little bit of English struck up a conversation with me and offered to guide me through the festival. Because Korean women are in general very reserved that immediately got my gut sense to tingling. At some point, she suggested that we hire a boat and take it out onto a lake or lagoon, and I felt real suspicious about that. She kept pushing that idea, and I thought after a while that I needed to get the hell out of there. I figured she was just trying to get me someplace where I could be jumped and robbed. I made some excuses and I told her I was okay on my own, but she would just not leave me. A few times I excused myself to use the bathroom until I found one that had a window that was big enough to climb through. I climbed out of the bathroom window, scaled a wall and took off running. This day in history, 22 January 1943. At Sanananda, on the northern coast of Papua, the Australian 18th Brigade reached the sea, and all Japanese resistance ended. The Australian forces in this sector suffered over 1,400 battle casualties, and the Americans 700. Close to 2,000 Japanese soldiers were buried. The triumph at Sanananda signified the conclusion of a six-month campaign in Papua, where the Japanese deployed approximately 20,000 troops, with over 13,000 succumbing to the conflict. This is the true story of a Catholic Nurse (Irena Gut) who risked it all to hide a group of Jews from the atrocities they faced in Poland. Whats crazier is that she hid them in a commandeered home occupied by a German Major who forced her to be his housekeeper. This story is WILD. I can’t believe it’s 2024 and I’m just hearing about this now. How this is a limited Fathom Event release and not a major Hollywood production is baffling to me. Although I have my theories that I’ll keep to myself. As soon as the credits rolled I was compelled to research the real life woman behind this incredible story. Each circumstance got more intense than the last and I couldn’t believe what I was watching was true. And I’m glad I did. The unshakable faith, courage, compassion, and moral code of this incredible woman deserves to be remembered, celebrated and shared with the world. I feel like it could’ve been a more authentic and overall better movie in the hands of more experienced filmmakers, but that didn’t take anything away from the story. Which is an absolutely incredible act of heroism and humanity displayed during a time of complete savagery. It’s playing again tonight to end its criminally limited two day engagement. So if you can’t see it in theaters, ✅GO✅ search for it when it hits streaming.
