During my many Africa trips, I have seen and observed the “Banded Mongoose”. They have large heads, small ears, short muscular limbs and long tails. Their body is long, their feet are short and their fur is grayish brown and black with several dark brown to horizontal bars across the back. I have seen them in the open plains of the savanna, walking across dirt roads and even wandering into safari camps. We were slowly driving on one of the many dirt roads at Tsavo West, when our guide, Marc, noticed two small mongoose on the side of the road and identified them as “Dwarf Mongoose”. I had never seen nor heard of this unique species. They are the smallest African carnivores and inhabit the grasslands, wooded savannas and dense bush. Dwarf Mongoose are common in areas with abandoned termite mounds, where they tend to sleep and live, and avoid dense forests and deserts. They are highly social and live in extended family groups. A dominant pair heads the group and all group members help to rear the pups and guard the group against predators. Dwarf Mongoose and hornbills have developed a unique relationship. Hornbills will gather around termite mounds and wait for the Dwarf Mongoose to come out. They will then forage together and warn each other of nearby raptors and other predators. Hornbills will sometimes provide the Dwarfs with wake up calls and the Dwarfs may even hesitate to leave the termite mounds without them. Dwarfs are difficult to spot. They use the dense bush to hide from many predators.
