Mursi Tribe women with her lip plates Lower Omo Valley Ethiopia 🇪🇹 Visiting the Omo valley can feel like a journey through time, arriving at something as close as there is to an untouched Africa free from outside influences. There are thousands of Omo pastoralists, cultivators, and hunters who still live almost exactly as their ancestors did hundreds of years ago. Why does a giraffe have a blue tongue? Scientists disagree. One says that the tongue is blue because there are few blood vessels in a giraffe's tongue, so the tongue does not bleed every time the giraffe pulls leaves from plants that also have many thorns (such as the acacia where the giraffe likes to pick the leaves and eat). Other scientists say there is melanin in a giraffe's tongue that prevents the tongue from getting sunburned. But there are more animals with a blue tongue and those animals do not eat leaves from trees/shrubs with thorns and do not eat all day long in the bright sun, which could burn their tongues. Just think of the polar bear, which also has a blue tongue. But the chow chow (dog breed), some lizard species and impalas also have blue tongues. Why? I don't know. Waarom heeft een giraf een blauwe tong? Wetenschappers zijn het daar niet over eens. De ene zegt dat de tong blauw is omdat er weinig bloedvaten in de tong van een giraf zitten waardoor de tong niet bloedt elke keer als de giraf bladeren trekt van planten die ook veel doornen hebben (zoals de acacia waar de giraffe graag de bladeren van plukt en eet). Andere wetenschappers zeggen dat er melanine in de tong van een giraf zit wat voorkomt dat de tong door de zon verbrand. Maar er zijn meer dieren met een blauwe tong en die dieren eten geen bladeren van bomen/struiken met doorns en eten niet de hele dag door in de felle zon waardoor hun tong zou kunnen verbranden.
