Two’s company: Wanstead boasts not one roundel clock but two, and its platforms and concourse were nicely restored a few years back, with the tiling and “Scrabble letter” banding looking very slick. Up above ground, the aesthetic is really the blockhouse or pillbox - the 1930s Scandi brick look translated into 1940s austerity concrete. Some people might say my life is in a rut: our next Central Line station is Redbridge, and it’s looking a little tired in places. Like Gants Hill and Wanstead, it was tunnelled before the war, but didn’t open until 1947, with the tunnels hosting a Plessey factory during the war years. The station is straightforward, above and below ground, though spotting roundel clocks is always a bonus. The Holden design is subdued, a drum’n’box boxed in by busy roads and worn infrastructure, lacking the pristine finish of its earlier Piccadilly Line confreres.
