This weekend I went for a run to St James’s to see one of London’s most recognisable Art Deco buildings, 55 Broadway 🏃🏻♂️ Did you know? The building features a pair of sculptures by Jacob Epstein - Day and Night - which were heavily criticised and led to Epstein having to chisel almost two inches off Day’s unmentionables to end the uproar. Transport for London vacated the premises in 2020 and it is now being converted into a luxury hotel. Paddington station began life as a much smaller wooden building, in the year after Queen Victoria took to the throne. Famously a small friendly bear from deepest darkest Peru was found there in Micheal Bond’s popular children’s book. He wore an old hat, duffel coat and had a battered suitcase with his favourite marmalade sandwich under his hat. London is a bad habit one hates to lose
A 1946 map printed to publicise the extension of the Central line from Liverpool Street to Stratford in December of that year. It stands out in its famous red colour, with all other lines shown in black. The map also depicts the line’s (then) upcoming extensions. It extended further east to Leytonstone (May 1947), Newbury Park/Woodford (Dec 1947), Hainault (May 1948), Roding Valley/Loughton (Nov 1948) and Ongar (Sep 1949) in stages throughout the remainder of the decade. The London General Omnibus Company (LGOC) dates back to the 1850s, but it wasn’t until 1902 that it began using motor omnibuses and 1929 for coach services. These coach services used more comfortable vehicles than the standard bus services (and had a higher fare), and in 1930 a distinct entity – Green Line Coaches – was established. Here is one of their maps, from 1931. The map shows Down Street underground station, a disused Piccadilly line station which closed in 1932.
