Lynmouth Foreland Lighthouse, also known as Countisbury Foreland Lighthouse. First lit on 28 September 1900, the lighthouse was built to assist vessels passing through the Bristol Channel. The light is 67 metres above the high tide and flashes 4 times every 15 seconds. Northern fulmar gliding at sunrise. The name fulmar is derived from the two Old Norse words - fúll = “foul” and már = “gull” referring to the stinking stomach oil that they produce. This oil has two functions: 1. Firstly It is an extremely energy-rich food they can regurgitate on the wing whilst on long journeys and the rich oil is also fed to their young. 2. Secondly, fulmar can also accurately squirt this viscous sticky substance up to three metres as a defence.
