Happy World Penguin Day continued!! Some things you could do to help support penguins ability to thrive, is to support the fight against climate change, burning less fossil fuels, or simply have a smaller waste impact and keep our oceans cleaner. It may feel like nothing but while there is still hope there is still a chance. The penguin pictured is a yellow eyed penguin, who live only in southern New Zealand. I was lucky enough to spend the first half of March volunteering on a study on the fascinating Whakahao/New Zealand sea lion population in Port Pegasus, Rakiura. This photo was taken after that study was complete on a trip to Ulva Island, which, this year, has seen two pups born there. As the world's most endangered sea lion, this species needs all the help it can get! Stewart Island day 1. After an early start, Joëlle and I were soon on a rather wobbly boat from Bluff to Stewart Island. After a choppy day just the day before I wasn't sure I was up for being tossed around again, but after the first 10mins my stomach soon settled to constant up and down, and side to side. After reaching the island and dropping our stuff off at the hostel we were right back on another boat, this time to Ulva Island for a nature walk and some bird spotting. Wandering around we spotted a few birds including the rare Yellwohead (sadly not pictured) and the Stewart Island Robin (pictured). Following which it was back to Stewart Island for a spot of pizza for tea, before getting extremely lucky and being offered a free Kiwi spotting session from one of the island own residents! Heading out at 9.30, flagging though we were from a 5.45am start, it would certainly turn out to be worth it. After a drive and wander around we soon spotted another group watching something in the distance. Turns out it was a full grown Kiwi, and a big'un at that. We spent the next 20mins or so watching this Kiwi go about it's business and even catching itself a monster sized worm, before it disappeared off back into the bushes. An absolutely wonderful unique site I'll certainly never forget. All there was left to do after that was collapse into bed, we had another great walk to start in the morning! #travel #newzealand #workingholiday #stewartisland #ulvaisland

The weather hasn’t presented me with great shooting conditions so far, but regardless, it has been wonderful exploring some new parts of this country. We had a couple of days down at Stewart Island - I’ve never been there before. We saw wild deer, penguins, sea lions fighting on the beach, and so many birds! I finally got a shot of the delightful little #tomtit over at #ulvaisland. We are now back in Arrowtown for a few days before heading to Lake Tekapo. It’s a little too early still for the trees to be wearing their autumn colours, but hopefully by the time we are back here in a couple of weeks they will be all golden and red. #newzealand #newzealandlife #nzroadtrip #stewartisland #runningaway

Yellowhead / Mohua / Gelbköpfchen / Mohoua ochrocephala. Neuseeland, Februar 2024. Das Gelbköpfchen ist ein endemischer Vogel der Südinsel Neuseelands. Er lebt in Wäldern und frisst Insekten. Es gibt noch etwa 5.000 Exemplare. Die Population nimmt ab, vor allem wegen Habitatverlusts und eingeschleppter Raubtiere. Das Gelbköpfchen gilt als gefährdet. Ich habe mich sehr gefreut, als ich welche auf Ulva Island entdeckt habe. Wenn ich mich nicht irre, ist auf dem letzten Bild ein Gelbköpfchen-Jungvogel zu sehen. Bevor es zurück auf die Südinsel geht, bin ich mit @ulva_island_ferry_ hinüber nach Ulva Island gefahren. Ulva Island ist frei von invasiven Schädlingen, daher kann man dort sehr viele Vögel beobachten. Absolut genial. Am Strand kämpften Seelöwen miteinander. Außerdem sahen wir Pinguine, Kakas, Moreporks und vieles mehr. Ein schöner kleiner Ausflug. Später ging es mit dem Flugzeug zurück nach Invercargill. . . Before heading back to the South Island, I went with @ulva_island_ferry_ over to Ulva Island. Ulva Island is free of invasive predators, so you can see a lot of birds there. Absolutely awesome. Sea lions fought with each other on the beach. We also saw penguins, kakas, moreporks and much more. A nice little trip. 留学291日目☔️ Stewart island trip Today, I went to Ulva island that took 10mins from Stewart island by ferry taxi to see penguin and many kinds of birds. As a result, I saw little blue penguin, but they were too small to take photos from the ferry. Plus, I saw islands unique birds and seals. When I got to there, we needed to clean our shoes to prevent pests or some bacteria from coming in the island. While hiking, it was raining and it didn’t stop. I am supposed to explore for 6 hours in the island, but I almost bought a cold, so I asked ferry driver to go back early. After getting backpacker, I watched a movie on Netflix. I got along with a woman who came from Switzerland 🇨🇭and talked about travel that we have been to. I am impressed by her because it was first time to travel for 4months and stay camping. For her, coming to NZ is her dream and her dream come true. She said to me that she is so happy even thought it was raining and she couldn’t go outside. And she smiled. It was ladies day out today while the men went on a fishing expedition with a boat operator called Fluff. I'm sure they will have some funny stories to tell when they get back. We caught a water taxi to Ulva Island and spent 2 hours walking the island. We were on the lookout for a kiwi but came across 2 wekas and a sea lion instead.
