For #seabirdsunday (is that actually a thing yet?) I’ve steered away from penguin and back to Albatross but as with my last it’s not just your average albatross. I give to you two Albatross Almanac books one of which amazingly still has its original belly band. HAVE YOU SEEN THESE BEFORE?? Why Almanac you might wonder……….well at least I did, so I had a little google and found the meaning of Almanac: •Abook containing a calendar of days, weeks, and months and usually facts about the rising and setting of the sun and moon, changes in the tides, and information of general interest. I guess they have covered some of this as you can see by the pictures as both books have a calendar year over 4 pages showing star signs and naming any special dates. The rest of the book is lots of short stories from numerous well known writers. As with our southbound Drake Passage crossing I spent almost all my time out on deck mainly looking for Albatross. Thankfully for our northbound crossing it was far more ‘Drake Lake’ than our southbound ‘Drake Shake’! @alittleofftrack was certainly happy. … Some Albatross are easier to photograph than others! And with this Albatross(the one I most wanted to see) it was all about patience. I literally spent hours on the freezing deck waiting for it. The White-Capped Albatross A few months ago I went out on a short tour with @monarchwildlife in Dunedin and was fortunate to snap this bird after it had been chasing some fishing boats back into land. We didn’t see many Albatross that day as it turns out they need bad weather to encourage them to fly (that day was a peach.) Albatrosses are the world’s largest sea birds. They have massive wingspans ranging anywhere between 2-3m. Because they are so large they often need some assistance from the weather and particularly wind to help them soar and fly around the place. They are master gliders, so much so, they spend 85% of their lives at sea gliding on air currents. You might hear the name Mollymawk when referring to Albatross. That is often used to refer to smaller birds in the Albatross family. The White-Capped Albatross also goes by the name Shy Mollymawk. Fun Fact: Some White-Capped Albatrosses are able to fly 1,000km in 24 hours.
