NZ Road Trip Day 20 Otago Peninsula Part 2 80ish km and a stunning drive We drove onto the peninsula which is adjacent to Dunedin and we skirted the sea road, twists and turns, the sun was shining, the perfect day to stop & start on beaches and coves. We’ll share the driving footage another day, it was awesome We took a little detour off the coastal road to visit Lanarch Castle’s Garden and walked the trail discovering native NZ plants & trees. It had a bit of an Alice in Wonderland vibe We drove along the coastal road to Portobello and an ate our pack lunch on a bench over looking the water. Onto the tip of the peninsula to Natures Wonders Naturally. We’d booked an Argo (ATV) ride to see some wildlife up close. Even on the drive in we saw an Albatross, our first in the wild!! The ride was wild and our stomach muscles will ache tomorrow especially Mrs4F who was in the back alone (usually 7 passengers but there were just us 2) so she was bouncing around all over the place! We saw fur seals, some being nursed by their mums and the adorable Blue Penguins. The family who run this conservation project on their farm protect the animals and don’t interact with them. This beautiful white beach has not been walked on by a human foot for 23 years, it’s given over to the natural habitat. We heard about the Antarctic tidal flow and one species of seaweed only found here & Patagonia! A very interesting and exhilarating hour. The drive back down the hill was stunning, we stopped at a beach, one that on the way up the hill I’d declared I’d be swimming at on the way down until I heard there have been great whites in the harbour! But we chatted to a local about a community project to reclaim a beach and it had also been designated a freedom camp site!! Check Betty out parked up there ➡️ We’d already paid to stay onsite down the road, but what a place it would have been to stay. Fish & chips from the chippy for tea and an early night! This was a very welcome experience after being in a&e this morning with inflammation and a lot of pain in my foot - not sure what’s causing it yet but at least, I think 🤔 😅, it’s not broken. Probably due to the spinal problems I have including adult #scoliosis and change of gait causing pain and problems in other parts of my body.
