Throwback to @miaohki's "Protect Our Trees" mural in Strathcona! “'Protect Our Trees' features three bonsai trees: the first is a cherry blossom tree, the middle pot has a person in a kimono tending a fir tree sapling, and the last features a Japanese maple tree. The kimono is adorned with traditional Métis beadwork designs that connect to the roots of the sapling. The cherry blossom with the image of Japan’s Mount Fuji on the pot is protected by a shimenawa warding off evil spirits. The Japanese maple tree’s pot has Vancouver’s “The Lions” mountain range carved on its surface. “千樹の森を守ろう” on the center pot roughly translates to “Protect Ancient Trees”, with emphasizes on the importance of protecting sacred trees. Throwback to @rachelwada and @jsiloh's "Tempestas" mural Downtown! “Driven by the concept of “East Meets West” this mural is a collaborative effort between Rachel Wada and Siloh. The artists were inspired to celebrate and commemorate Vancouver, the city that they call home. Vancouver fits the saying “East Meets West” because it is a hub for many nomadic peoples of different cultures. The artwork features a goddess-like figure surrounded by lush florals, which were created by Siloh. It is embellished with splashing waves and whimsical hands which were created by Rachel. Rachel’s work displays a graphic-feel with hard outlines while Siloh’s work is painted softly with broken edges and defining volume. The artists hope that this mural will breathe new life into the Granville Street area, known historically as the nightlife scene of downtown. "Artist Statement: Africana-brown, black, orange and yellow-these colours represent the vividness and boldness that accompanies being Black. This is how the artist expresses her journey through early adulthood in a new city. Immigrating alone to Vancouver from Mozambique to pursue an undergraduate degree was the bravest and toughest transition she had undergone so far. She sacrificed everything for the promise of a better yet unknown future. In this piece she depicts herself through the eyes of a black female wearing African printed earrings, surrounded by color, who leaves prints in her surroundings whenever she is. Something changed within her, but also something did not. We don't change, we evolve. Artist Bio: Enia Sitole is an emerging artist who grew up in Maputo, Mozambique. Currently, she is based in Vancouver, BC pursuing an undergraduate degree in Political Science and Philosophy. Sitole enjoys depicting a wide range of things through her drawings, presently she is focused on the aesthetics of the African female body and fashion design. Enia aspires to establish a fine art and textile business to create economic change and empowerment for young women from impoverished villages across Mozambique." Throwback to @negiyakisoba's "ISOME" mural in Mt. Pleasant! One of the big differences between beginner mural artists and the professionals is the use of projection when tracing their artwork onto the wall. As an artist becomes accustomed to working on large scales, they no longer need to project and trace their work onto a wall. ONEQ (pronounced Oni-Q) uses only a rough sketch and colour palette before scaling up her piece onto the wall. Working with aerosol, she traces an outline of her piece onto the wall then fills in the details using intuition. Throwback to @fintan_magee's "The Evening" mural in Mt. Pleasant! "Look up for this mural! Fintan Magee usually works with models to design his portrait style murals. He takes photos then transposes them onto the wall. After receiving the wall dimensions, he took photos in his studio in Australia. Due to delays in getting proper equipment and experienced assistants qualified to work on such a large scale mural, Fintan had to wait in Vancouver (even staying in an empty apartment in the building! Taking advantage of the time, Fintan wanted the mural to speak to Vancouver and selected two arts organizers, Nick Collinet and Cazimi Loro, to retake the photograph. Recently, we heard about the passing of Robert Butler, one of the subjects of our 2016 mural, The Present is a Gift, by artists Drew Young and Jay Senetchko. Bob was an optician in Mount Pleasant for over 6 decades and had a profound impact on the community through his dedication, fostering genuine connections and enriching lives in the neighbourhood. When it comes to photographing special events, it can be a little daunting but also OH SO FUN! There is usually so much going on, and you get to decide which aspects of the event to document (or if you’re lucky, you get a shot list!) 🤩 Here is some advice for outdoor #EventPhotography: 1. Go in with optimism. Always. You almost have to persist on the idea that you’ll 💯% capture some amazing shots & memorable moments. Post-production you and your client will thank you because most times, what you capture during the event thrives off of the energy and motivation you have to be attentive to everything going on your surroundings! 🙌 2. Choose and invest in a go-to Post Production software (or app if you prefer) for all things Colour Correction, Batch-resizing, and Word Mark application. Using the proper dedicated tools of the trade can save you a lot of screen-time! 🖥️ 3. Practice positioning yourself in a crowd & Watch your step! Have strategies - look for elevated urban features to get in that high-point shot, or get to event programming early to snatch an unobstructed view of the performance 🎭 4. Practice Self-Care during events. Yes, this is important and can affect your performance. You want to be dressed for the weather. Wear a HAT. Wear SUNGLASSES 😎 Just because you’re photographing doesn’t mean you shouldn’t protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. You’re a photographer and you’ll need that eye protection! And, STAY HYDRATED 💦 5. Consider Colour Correction 🔆 There’s no denying that editing photos will make them stand out and improves details within the capture. Sure, sometimes photos turn out perfect straight from the shot but many times we are playing with the weather, lighting and unexpected shadows we are given and employing Colour Correction will save a decent photo from going to the 🗑️ can! This iteration of the project focuses on the powerful connection of the local Nations to the spirit and animals of the Salish Sea, drawing compositional strength and palette from the vibrant colours found above and below the ocean's surface. Nods to the dramatic shapes of our ice-age fjords and local sea life like Wolf Eels and Glass Sponges take centre stage against a field of colours drawn from beneath the waves. Stardust, Sea Monsters, electricity and water are interwoven with ancestral iconography and colour. Travelling as one into the unknown, each element interconnects into the whole. The Canoe brought many teachings into my life as a youth that I take into the present day. When we work together as one, we travel with more ease in our hearts, bodies and minds. This image is placed in a time and space encompassing the past, present and future. This piece fuses iconography and oral history from my Klahoose (Coast Salish), Wuikinuxv and Kwakwaka’wakw ancestors. I recognize that this work will temporarily live on unceded Coast Salish territory and acknowledge my place as a visitor to this land. The weather is taking a turn for the better here on the west coast which finally gave me a change to create outside again! Continuing with my series of more sculptural interventions I decided to photograph this one in two locations. I am quite please with the composition of the hands however I believe I need to start working much larger! This piece feels small and I can only imagine a larger sculpture would have a more substantial impact on the viewer!

The winter months keep me in the studio brainstorming and practicing my fundamentals for the year to come!
