maison la roche was designed by le corbusier and his cousin, pierre jeanneret, in the suburbs of paris for a swiss banker with an extensive cubist art collection. the building consists of two residences - white cubes forming an L-shaped plan: one for le corbusier’s brother, albert jeanneret, and the other for their friend, raul la roche. the villa was built between 1923-1925 and represents one of the earliest and most significant examples of cubist concrete avant garde construction. it was also a precursor to the development of much larger and more complex projects that would fully incorporate le corbusier’s 1927 manifesto, “5 points toward a new architecture”: 1. Pilotis—narrow columns made of reinforced concrete—for structural support; 2. An open floor plan; 3. A free façade; 4. A roof garden, designed to incorporate the house more thoroughly into the landscape; and 5. Long rows of horizontal windows for the best uninterrupted view and natural light. the site was designated a UNESCO heritage site in 2016. today, maison jeanneret houses le corbusier foundation offices and maison la roche is a museum open to the public. i spent most of my time surveying the incredibly inventive details of the light-filled service kitchen on the lower level - a beautiful space that is rarely covered in the history books. thank you family for bearing with me.

The entry to both houses are oblique rather than frontal made transient rather than formal, in other words the point of arrival isn’t where one stops but where and how we continue moving- the house is a sensuous encounter of an enwrapped body. The hallways are pristine white, the rooms are painted in different colours as though they have a pulse blushing to the sight of a voyeur who may or may not enter. Mode moderne . . . Villa La Roche and the Home & Studio of Le Corbusier. Both by Le Corbusier. 25 minutes walking apart from each other. The Villa was like stepping into a Modernist painting or sculpture. The home and studio was where Le Corbusier built a two-level modern personal sanctuary. Both were stark and cleared of most personal objects, but they were still incredible. The one sadistic part of the home and studio is that it’s on the 7th and 8th floors of the historic building. While there is an elevator there’s a sign that says it’s for extremely rare use. I’m surprised I wasn’t panting up the stairs like some other unfortunate guests.

Le Corbusier / Villa La Roche 1925 First works of Le Corbusier that I came across were some of his last, in Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. This Villa La Roche is about 30 years pre Mill Owner‘s Association Building for example. Visiting his earlier works in Europe has never been as breathtaking so far as it was in India. But it’s always super fascinating to observe the works of this early period that often reveals moments that seem a bit uncertain and fragile imo that continued to evolve into something much more stronger and clear in Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. Thinking about the work of Le Corbusier yesterday I remembered this Lego set of his famous Villa Savoye house that I built a little while ago. So much of what's shown of his work is the outsides of his buildings, but I've always felt that his 'machine for living' philosophy was more about the living than the machine. His interior spaces, and the ways he would shape the movement within and between them, was remarkable. I marvelled when I experienced the curved walkway in Villa La Roche in Paris - a totally different sensation of moving between two floors. Here from above you can see the internal terrace he created on the first floor at Villa Savoye, and again ramps rather than stairs to move between here and the roof. It alters the physical sensation and changes where a person will be looking (or where they need to look) whilst on this journey.
