Going to the laundromat for many of our families can be a barrier because of transportation difficulties. When we say that our volunteers are changing lives, we truly mean it! Recently, the New York Times highlighted volunteer, Gil Howard, at World Relief Modesto. What began as volunteering to furnish homes for refugees and driving them to appointments turned into Gil teaching over 400 Afghan women how to drive in the California Central Valley. And he does it all, free of charge. It should be noted that while this is an amazing way to support our neighbors, we don’t allow behind the wheel teaching and Gil does this on his own accord. Swimming Toward a Dream Written by @reemfaruqi Art by @asma.enayeh Published by Page Street Kids @pagestreetkids This powerful narrative nonfiction picture book documents the true story of Yusra Mardini. Yusra is a swimming champion who has faith and dreams of one day making it to the Olympics. But when she and her sister have to flee Syria due to the civil war, she finds herself on a perilous journey of survival en route to take refuge in Germany. Many countries close their doors to the group. The boat they are travelling on to reach Greece, overfilled with refugees, breaks down and begins to sink. Yusra and her sister heroically swim the boat to safety. Yusra goes on to compete in the 2016 Olympics in the first ever Refugee Team. I remember watching this on TV. I may have even seen Yusra march in the opening ceremony. This story is so beautifully written and the artwork is stunning. The text and art work together perfectly to make this heartening story memorable and impactful for every reader. There is a timeline and map of Yusra's life and journey at the back. The author and illustrator have included notes at the end as well. This book will no doubt invoke a myriad of emotions and inspired actions including empathy, determination, acceptance and advocacy. With the local increase of food insecurity, we are grateful for the outpouring of support from our community this past month! Thanks to the dedication of volunteers at local packing events, we were able to prepare 300 essential food boxes as part of our annual pack out at Ma'ruf Dallas. Islamic Relief generously contributed another 300, while Islamic Center of Frisco's Barakah Basket event provided 150, and East Plano Islamic Center added a final 50. These boxes were distributed during Ramadan at our events and through our pantry, supporting our community's food security needs. Support our pantry today! Because apartments are so expensive, large families frequently have to squeeze into smaller apartments. While we can't make an apartment bigger, we were able to utilize this space for 6 beds, personalized for each family member, and and for a very welcoming living room area! #WelcomeRefugees
