What’s on my stand: Music from Dragon Ball Z, The Legend of Zelda, and Harry Potter Today was a low-key practice day. It’s the first day of spring break, and I really didn’t want to do anything. (My kid had the right idea and napped for most of it.) But I didn’t want to skip practicing, so I made the most out of what I did play. Let this be a reminder that any practice is better than no practice. (Well, sometimes no practice is the right choice, but that’s for another post.) I purposely kept today’s session fun and light-hearted, without worrying so much about the little things. Tomorrow I’m diving into some heavier repertoire that will require a totally different mindset and a ton of focus. After relaxing today, I’ll be ready to tackle every tricky note and challenging phrase. What’s on my stand: Bernold embouchure exercises, Harry Potter, and Dragon Ball Z Wednesdays have a reputation for being my longest teaching days. From sunrise to sunset, I’m either in a lesson or teaching a masterclass. But as they say, time flies when you’re having fun! After nearly a month-long break, I pulled out Bernold’s La Technique d’Embouchure. And boy, it was just what my tone needed! Although I’ve been really pleased with my playing lately, I’m always looking for ways to improve. And the Bernold provided precisely the workout my lips needed today. After playing a handful of vocalises and interval studies, I heard noticeable differences in my sound, musicality, and phrasing. Let that be a reminder to all: No matter how accomplished you become, there is always room for improvement. What’s on my stand: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, John Williams Preparing for tomorrow’s rehearsal! I’m putting the final touches on the technical spots in this piece. Got to be ready go whatever tempo our maestro decides to take it! And that’s why I practice daily. (Well, that’s one of several reasons.) Showing up prepared to rehearsals isn’t optional—it’s expected. Sightreading your music during rehearsal wastes valuable time. And it’s a surefire way to irritate your director and ruin your reputation. Want to be taken seriously in the music industry and land more jobs? Be prepared for every note, every downbeat, and every tempo change. Oh, and the more you practice at home, the more skilled you’ll become. I call that a win-win! What’s on my stand: Concert program music for BCO Another fantastic concert night! Our program is quite an eclectic mix, from show tunes to Shostakovich and everything in between. I hope the audience enjoys hearing the music as much as I enjoy playing it! But after a long commute to and from, I’m ready to call it a night. One more concert tomorrow night—and it’s an even longer drive! I better actually get some decent sleep tonight. (But will I? What’s on my stand: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, John Williams I’m still in the middle of a concert series but am happy to begin working on a new program too! (More John Williams—always a favorite!) A full music stand is a happy music stand. Let’s discuss something all flutists (and probably all wind players) experience: bad tone days. You know what I’m taking about—those days when no matter how hard you try, you just sound like a hair dryer…and a struggling one at that. What causes them? Loads of things. Dehydration, chapped lips, and illness are common. Stress, exhaustion, anxiety, or just having a bad day can also make your sound suffer. But you can’t always pack up your instrument and walk away. The show must go on! Plus, playing through a bad tone day can sometimes help. The next time your sound is less than desirable, focus on good habits. Take a few deep breaths, relax your body, and support from your core. Long tones, harmonics, and intervals are your best friends. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt to have some lip balm and water on hand. Most of all, remember that this too shall pass. Before you know it, your tone will be back in full force and more beautiful than ever! What’s on my stand: Shostakovich, Gershwin, Fauré, and a bunch more! Rehearsal time! I barely had enough time to process last night’s concert before heading off to rehearsal today. Honestly, I could use a nap. I’m crazy busy at the moment. But as I always say, a working musician is a happy musician (and a fed one). I would rather back-to-back rehearsals and performances than a lot of free time. The only struggle is balancing my practice time to include everything. What’s on my stand: Rimsky-Korsakov, Florence Price, Gity Razaz, Gershwin, and Faure Practice. Eat. Sleep (negligible). Repeat. That’s how my week has been going. How about you? With such a busy schedule for the rest of the month, I can’t afford to slack on my practicing. And in addition to plenty of concert rep, I’ve been diligent in playing lots of long tones, breathing, and vibrato exercises. Practicing isn’t about “winging” it. It’s about making a plan to improve. I enter every session with defined goals in mind. That ensures I get the most out of every single note. Oh, and I make sure to have fun too! What’s on my stand: Scheherazade, Shostakovich 5, An American in Paris, a Josh Groban medley, and too much more to mention! February is getting busy! Just finished tonight’s rehearsal (forgot to snap a pic) and have concerts for two different ensembles this weekend. Lots of practicing for me! (Oh, and I’m still not getting enough sleep—but that’s another story for another day…) “But I don’t have enough time to practice,” said one (or twenty) of my students. Listen, I get it! Finding time to practice isn’t always easy. I’m not in school anymore, but I do work full-time, gig part-time, maintain other side hustles, and raise a five-year-old. Time is a valuable commodity! But I don’t make excuses not to practice. Instead, I schedule time into my day and hold myself accountable to actually do it. Don’t have hours upon hours to play? Ten minutes is still more than zero! And I bet once you start practicing, you won’t want to stop. It was dreary outside, but making music with these fine musicians brightened my day. Next week is going to be a busy one. A new concert series for BCO begins on Monday, and I have a concert with MSO on Saturday. That doesn’t leave much time for eating and sleeping. But, as always, I’m stoked! What’s on my stand: Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov Public service announcement: The flute and piccolo are NOT the same instrument. They share a basic fingering system, but that’s where the similarities end. Everything else—tone production, articulation, and especially intonation—is vastly different. See exhibit A (pictured): The fast articulated section in the final movement of Scheherazade. It’s a standard piccolo excerpt—one that I know like the back of my hand. BUT the way I practiced and performed it on piccolo in the past doesn’t translate the same on flute. Now that I’m preparing the flute part, I’ve had to retrain myself to play it like a flutist instead of a piccoloist. Yes, the fingerings are the same, but the response is an entirely different beast. Just something to keep in mind the next time you invite other members of the flute family into your practice room. What other differences have you found between flute and piccolo? #whatsonmystand #insidethepracticeroom #flute #flutist #flautist #fluteteacher #scheherazade #classicalmusic #orchestralmusician #practicemakesprogress

What’s on my stand: La Technique d’Embouchure, Bernold; Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov Feeling a bit tense? It’s time to release all the muscles in your body, from your little toe all the way up to the crown of your head. Relax your jaw. Lower your shoulders. Inhale deeply. Aww, don’t you feel better? Tension happens to everyone—even the most zen people. But it’s a recipe for disaster in the practice room. Why? When flutists get tense, it causes tone and intonation issues galore! (Hello sharpness, my old friend…) That’s why body awareness so important. Tackle tension during your warmups. Do some arm and neck stretches. Consider striking a few yoga poses. And don’t forget to breathe! Once you learn how to control tension, you’ll hear amazing results in your playing. What’s on my stand: Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov; In The Midst Of Flux, Gity Razaz; Piano Concerto in One Movement, Florence Price Rehearsal day! And after a week of being under the weather, it was just what I needed. As always, I left feeling on top of the world! Playing with others reinforces a key skill: listening. Rehearsals are when you get to fine-tune all the parts to create amazing music. Listening to how your sound blends with the ensemble is crucial. Plus, listening is a skill that will carry you far in all aspects of your life. Reminder to open your ears. You never know what you might hear! What’s on my stand: Rimsky-Korsakov, Florence Price, Gity Razaz This has been a LONG (but not highly productive) week. To say I’m glad it’s over is an understatement. And I’m definitely looking forward to more exciting adventures on the horizon. What made this week so blah? Sheer exhaustion mixed with a pesky upper-respiratory virus. (Yuck!) And let me tell you: Practicing both physically and mentally demanding music when you feel like a zombie is a recipe for missed notes, weak articulations, and under-supported phrases. No amount of caffeine helped. But I’m not complaining. Life is like that at times. Instead, it’s better to look on the bright side and just do what you can. What’s on my stand: Piano Concerto in One Movement, Florence Price It was a light practice day and a busy virtual teaching day. Wait, did I just mention virtual lessons? Those are so 2020…well, except for the fact that I still do them today. It’s true. Not only do I have some students who I only see virtually, but I also use online lessons to work around random scheduling conflicts. And let me tell you—virtual lessons benefit everyone! Back in my day (yes, I said that in a grandma voice), this type of technology didn’t exist. How old am I? Let’s just say I clearly remember the piercing sound of dial-up internet. (Welcome, you’ve got mail!) Virtual lessons and meetups open the door to so many opportunities: Study with prodigies across the globe. Perform in online masterclasses. Enter digital competitions. What’s on my stand: Nothing. Your eyes didn’t deceive you. Nothing is on my stand today. What in the world does that mean? Exactly what it sounds like. I didn’t *gasp* practice today. And no, I don’t feel bad about it. Instead, I took time to rest. And trust me, it was extremely needed. I tend to run on overdrive without ever slowing down. Today, I slowed down—to a complete stop. You only get one body, so be sure to take care of it as well as you can. Will I practice tomorrow? Absolutely. And I bet my playing will sound worlds better because I prioritized myself today. So go ahead and take a day off if you need it. Just don’t make it a habit. What’s on my stand: Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov; In The Midst Of Flux, Gity Razaz; Piano Concerto in One Movement, Florence Price Rehearsal day! Yay! Unfortunately, I woke up not feeling my best, but I still persevered. And as always, I enjoyed every minute. Now for a more serious topic: Tuning. Maintaining a center of pitch is crucial for all musicians. No one wants to listen to an out-of-tune concert. But pitch doesn’t come naturally for most. That’s why I ALWAYS practice with a tuner. Very few people have perfect pitch. The experts like to say the odds are about 1 in 10,000. (Not me!) And even *if* you’re one of the lucky ones, you still need pitch flexibility in ensembles. A tuner won’t magically give you perfect pitch. But you will develop a strong sense of relative pitch. Plus, you’ll train your ear to hear and match even the most subtle tuning fluctuations. So make tuners a mainstay in your practice regimen. No one will judge you for using one. But I will give you plenty of side eye if you don’t! (Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox now…) Be honest: Do you always use a tuner? #whatsonmystand #flute #flutist #flautist #fluteteacher #orchestrarehearsal #classicalmusic #scheherazade #practicemakesprogress

What’s on my stand: Florence Price & Rimsky-Korsakov Are all musicians workaholics? I am definitely a type-A, and if I’m not working in some capacity, I feel lazy. It’s been years since I took off more than two days in a row. And you know what? I’m okay with that. Maybe I have the mentality of a starving artist. I know that stereotype has a lot of truth behind it. (Luckily, I’ve never found myself in a dire situation like that.) Or maybe I’m just hardwired like this. Honestly, I think that’s the most likely answer. Hard work is crucial for musicians. After all, if you’re not practicing, someone else is. And with music constantly evolving, there are always new techniques to learn. So perhaps we should all practice a little more this week. I’m not suggesting working 24/7 and foregoing sleep like me. But challenge yourself to put in a little more work and effort to see how much you improve. Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk. How much do you practice each week? #whatsonmystand #flute #flutist #flautist #fluteteacher #musician #hardworkpaysoffs #practicemakesprogress

What’s on my stand: Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov; Piano Concert in One Movement, Florence Price Today turned out amazing. I arrived at work completely exhausted, wishing I could hibernate for the rest of winter. But my students brought me back to life. Their contagious energy fueled me enough to make it through the day. And teaching them was a blast. Everyone has blah days. But it’s possible to use the positive energy around you to turn those days into good ones. For me, teaching music always transforms a dark, dreary morning into a bright, sunshine-y afternoon. How is that possible? It’s all about perspective. Instead of dwelling on the negative, look at the glass as half full. Here’s what I remind myself: I get to make music every day. I get to share my passion with the next generation. I get to do this for a living. When I think about it, I really am living the dream. What’s on my stand: Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov; In The Midst Of Flux, Gity Razaz; Piano Concerto in One Movement, Florence Price Another amazing rehearsal—cold (well, freezing) but equally energizing. And as all of you know, I always look forward to rehearsing. Collaborating with other talented musicians is a privilege I never take for granted. How do I approach rehearsals? With a growth mindset. I go into each practice with an open mind and eagerness to learn, seeking ways to improve my own playing. Keep your eyes and ears open during every rehearsal, and I guarantee you’ll uncover new nuggets of musical wisdom. Above all, remember: No matter how old you get, you never stop learning. What’s on my stand: Ensembles for my students and a bass flute (ok, not literally on my stand…) What do I love the most about solo and ensemble season? The variety! After nearly a full semester of everyone playing the exact same etudes week after week, we get to spice things up. Hallelujah! Something my students enjoy this time of year is the opportunity to play different types of flutes. Several of them own piccolos. But none have regular access to an alto or bass flute—present party included. Luckily, the district where I teach does own these instruments. Low flutes are unicorns in band music. But they are crucial in flute choirs. They add much-needed depth and color. And you never forget the first time you hold an alto or bass flute. It’s something all flutists should experience at least once. What’s on my stand: In The Midst Of Flux, Razaz When will I learn that I’m getting too old for 12-hour teaching days? (Spoiler alert: The answer is never.) I enjoyed working with my students, but boy, was I glad to finally get back home. And I even managed five hours of sleep last night—that’s A LOT for me! This post was supposed to go up last night, but honestly, my brain was too fried to even think of a caption. (Not that this one is exciting in any way, shape, or form.) So let this be a quick reminder to take care of yourself. Musicians are famous for overbooking. We have a reputation for accepting every student, gig, and teaching request. But if you forget to make time for yourself, it will drain you—body and mind. Now I just need to remember to practice what I preach… Are you guilty of overextending yourself? #whatsonmystand #flute #flutist #flautist #fluteteacher #classicalmusician #insidethepracticeroom #practicemakesprogress

What’s on my stand: Long tones, intervals, excerpts, and miscellaneous tunes by memory Sometimes you practice not because you need to, but rather because you WANT to. (Honestly, I hope you look forward to playing every time you put your instrument together.) Today was one of those days for me. I went into my practice session without an agenda—just pure love for music. Sure, I have a lot on my stand (understatement) to break apart and practice. But mentally, making music for myself and without limitations is what I needed. Did I pull out any music? Nope. Instead, I played whatever popped into my mind. Long tones, intervals, and my favorite excerpts all made an appearance. So did playing tunes by ear and improvising melodies. It was freeing and helped my mind reset. And since some of the music is brand new to me, score studying was a must. Who plays before I come in? What instrument has the melody? How does my part fit with the ensemble? The score has all the answers! I highly recommend following along with the score before your first rehearsal. Oh, and listening to recordings is always helpful too! I did that a bunch tonight. What’s on my stand: Solos, solos, SOLOS! I’m drowning in solos for my students. And I’m here for it! After months of teaching all-region etudes, I’m beyond excited for solo and ensemble season. (Hope my students are too!) Having a new piece on your stand gives you a goal to work towards. Once you master it, you can look back and see how much you accomplished. What’s on my stand: Karg-Elert What a wild day! I usually enjoy my commutes. But today it was raining cats and dogs. (Nothing against actual cats and dogs — love them!) How bad was the rain? Let’s just say that I had a firm, white-knuckle grip on my steering wheel from start to finish. And when I finally arrived at the school, I was drenched — like fully soaked from head to toe. Umbrella? Don’t know her. I entered the school looking like a low-budget version of the already low-budget Swamp Thing — cold with frizzy hair and soggy clothes. Needless to say, I wasn’t in the mood to even touch my flute during lessons. Something about leaving puddles everywhere you stand doesn’t scream flutist. (You expect that from brass players!) Bad day? Nah. Everything about it was hysterical. I’m not one to take life all that seriously. There’s a lot more joy when you can see the humor in every situation, even the most ridiculous ones. And that’s why I pulled out my piccolo and played a little bit of Karg-Elert tonight. For some reason, it seemed like the perfect, somewhat wild, unpredictable pairing. What’s on my stand today: Solos for students—a lot of them… It’s the last day of winter break—sad and exciting all at once. I get back into the grind first thing in the morning. (And by grind, I mean teaching my awesome students, so I really can’t complain!) Choosing solos is a delicate task. On one hand, I want to challenge my students and help them learn new skills. But on the other hand, I don’t want to pick something that causes anyone undue stress. My students have to balance their practice time with school work, other extracurriculars, and jobs. Oh, and I want them to actually like their solo! So, I’m very careful to match each student with the right solo for them. And that’s what I spent this evening figuring out. Do you have a favorite flute solo? #whatsonmystand #flute #flutist #flautist #fluteteacher #musicteacher #practicemakesprogress

What’s on my stand: Orchestral Excerpts for Flute, Baxtresser Another day of playing what I want. This time around, I decided to revisit some of my favorite orchestral excerpts, paying close attention to old music makings and lesson notes. Do you ever re-read your lesson notes? The markings in this book are almost two decades old, but they are still quite valuable. No matter how long you play or how great you become, you never stop learning. What’s on my stand: The Firebird Suite, Stravinsky; Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov These are some of my favorite pieces to play, and I’m beyond excited to perform both of them in the upcoming months. Now it’s time to get them both concert ready. Today’s practice session wasn’t planned out at all. That’s rare for me. Instead, I just played what I wanted. (Luckily, I actually need to practice these pieces!) It’s easy to forget how to practice for fun. Especially as a working musician, concert programs and rehearsal schedules tend to take precedent over impromptu jam sessions. But never forget the real reason you play—because it brings you joy. What motivates you to practice every week? #whatsonmystand #insidethepracticeroom #flute #flutist #flautist #orchestralmusician #classicalmusic #practicemakesprogress

What’s on my stand this week? Now that I’m through the Modernism concerts and lectures, I’m determining if I want to submit a tape to the Kujala picc competition. I’ve been off and on working on the rep for about a month, but this week’s project is accurately assessing my piccolo skills: tone colors, intonation, articulation, and dynamic flexibility. Also sneaking in there is @jessemakermusic’s new piccolo piece - currently in the workshopping phase. #piccolo #flute #practice #whatsonmystand #newmusic

This one has been on my stand lately. It’s popped up in our ceremonial band books and it’s deceptively hard! Between the octave transposition and the weird grace notes it’s a brain buster. BUT, I’d rather play this than The Melody Shop any day 😂😂😂 #militarymusician #whatsonmystand #clarinetsdontlikeoctaves #johnphillipsousa
