Reflecting on the cities I’ve touched down in for different gigs. Some might ask, ‘Should you travel for a gig if you’re going to just break even?’ Here’s my take: 1. Broadening Horizons: Every city has its own musical vibe, its own energy. By playing in different places, I’ve absorbed diverse musical cultures, enhancing my own style in ways I couldn’t have imagined. 2. Unseen Opportunities: While the upfront payout might be modest, the long-term paybacks have been monumental. Think new fans, unexpected collaborations, and doors to bigger gigs opening up. 3. Exponential Networking: Every city means a new network. The relationships I’ve fostered by being on the move have been priceless. Every handshake, every conversation post-show, has added immense value to my journey. Not to mention the life long friends I’ve made. 4. Mastery Through Challenge: Traveling for gigs pushes you out of your comfort zone. New venues, different acoustics, varied audiences - they all test and refine your craft. The 10,000 hours needed to become a master are essential, take every opportunity to put in that work. 💡If you’re considering a gig outside your city but hesitant because of the payout, go for it at least once. Diving into the world of tribute shows has been such a rewarding journey for me, and I wanted to share why I think they’re an invaluable experience for any artist: 1️⃣ Celebration of Legends: It’s a chance to honor and celebrate the music and legacy of iconic artists. By recreating their magic, we ensure their music lives on for generations to come. This is important, because so many people don’t even have a clue about some older artists anymore. Gotta keep sharing the knowledge. 2️⃣ Skill Sharpening: It pushes you as a musician. Emulating another artist’s sound and style can be challenging, but it hones your versatility and broadens your skill set. This Stevie show PUSHED ME. 3️⃣ Fan Building: Tribute shows often draw a diverse crowd—from die-hard fans of the original artist to new listeners. It’s an opportunity to showcase your talents to a wider audience of people who already love the artist you’re paying homage to and NOW they love you TOO! And will probably draw comparisons to you and that artist. 4️⃣ Leadership Building: Organizing such a production strengthens your skills as a leader, because you have to really know everything about the music you’re playing, in order to get the vision across to the rest of the band. Everyone from lighting to sound to performers comes together with that shared vision. 5️⃣ Creativity Unleashed: While it’s about honoring someone else’s music, there’s always room to infuse your own flavor and make the show uniquely yours. This is something I’ve picked up over the years from different band leaders - and following this, I can say about 85-88% of the time, I can convince people to stay at my cover shows the whole time . And they all go wild every time. 🌟 Dos: * Start and Finish with Fire: Your opening and closing songs are key. Begin with a bang, and conclude with a climax. Every set. Why start with the downtempo Valerie when you can start with Wake Me Up by Avicii? * Ride the Emotional Waves: Balance the highs and lows to take your audience on a journey. Do this by charting out the BPMs and Keys of songs…how many mid tempo songs in a row? How many songs are in Fmaj? (Bmin is where I get stuck often lol). * Interact with the Audience : Engage your audience by introducing short moments between specific songs. Plot out so you aren’t saying awkward things. This could be a fun fact related to a song lyric, a quick story about how the next song came to be, or even inviting an audience member up to share a dance or sing along. It not only provides a breather but also increases audience ENGAGEMENT and INVESTMENT in your performance. ❌ Don’ts: * Overwhelm with New Tracks: It’s great to introduce new material, but mix in those crowd-pleasers too…because not all of us listened to the new Charlie Puth album…(I did, but they didn’t appreciate me doing three songs back to back). * Ignore the Venue’s Vibe: MAJOR KEY ALERT - Adjust your set to fit the environment. What works at a café may not work at a club. What works at a wedding doesn’t always work at a club….please. Think about the purpose of each one, the audience, alcohol consumption etc… * Stick Rigidly to the Plan: Be prepared to pivot if you feel the audience needs a change in pace or vibe. Like…if you see you’re on your third chorus at the end of Wagon Wheel and no one is singing anymore, you probably should have ended it a while ago….because everyone sings that chorus. A couple weeks ago, I got to see John Doyle, Mike McGoldrick, and John McCusker, in Omagh! It was the last concert of their tour! Albert and I drove up there and listened to phenomenal music, bought albums, and got to chat with each them! I got to meet Mike McGoldrick, who has greatly impacted my tin whistle career since I started in 2014. I’ve known of John McCusker for five years and his playing and original compositions are fantastic! And, of course, one of my biggest idols, John Doyle! John and I played tunes in California in 2018, which was one of the most fond memories I have. I’m excited to play tunes with him and Mike in the future whenever that would be! I recently became an Arts & Culture Partner with Atlanta-based @the.artpharmacy 🎶🩺 The nonprofit is doing something pretty remarkable through its efforts to connect healthcare patients with working musicians. By collaborating closely with managed care partners, the organization empowers healthcare professionals to write prescriptions for a variety of creativity-related mental health treatments 🙌 The outcome in my world is that a patient can now receive an actual medical prescription to come talk to me about songwriting, explore practical tools of music, and learn how to integrate these to better cope with modern life and find day-to-day meaning. Art Pharmacy’s mission aligns with my values in a big way, as we both believe that developing a personal creativity practice can be an essential wellness need. IMO, it’s one that could well be added to Maslow’s hierarchy! Anyway, massive cheers to the folks behind this organization. They are bridging a historically large gap between the world of healthcare and holistically minded creatives who ➡️ must also receive appropriate compensation to do what we do ⬅️

I am excited to start using my new pedal board for my guitar playing. The anticipation is building up, and I can’t wait to put the final touches on my pedal board and unleash its full potential. Templeboards Acoustic guitar pedalboards Grace Design BOSS American Musical Supply Godin Guitars (OFFICIAL) Electro-Voice this is the board that I’ve designed for wedding and outdoor incorporate events for 2024. I will be using one of three Golden Guitars : 1, Multiac Mundaia 2, Arena Flame Maple 3, Multiac Grand Concert SA (I have another small board with the Boss GM 800 Boss GK 8 Pin adapter and Fishman Aura. I play on D’Addario and Co. XTC46TT. All 3 guitar have pickup and dual source coming in though Shure wireless to Grace Bix or Alex. Out to Boss RV 200 for longer reverb. On the Boss RC-600 I use 4 channels to blend in pickup and mic sources. On guitar I use a Neumann MCM114 mic and Shure SM58 Vox. First time a minute and it felt great to get back on the kit for yall! We learned a cpl things last night: _Never underestimate the musical tastes of others. At one point we were literally going back and forth btwn death metal and Brazilian jazz every song 🤣 Definitely kept me on my toes. _I need to eat more before streaming haha. In the middle of playing an intense song and my body just gave out. Note to self, pack an apple and peanut butter! But hey, we got in over 2 hrs of playing, reconnected w old friends of the stream, made new friends, and I have a renewed sense of purpose this morning. Another one done. This one for my dear friend @karlgoldring Ash body in Mahoney's Utility Oil by @guitarmill with a bit more work in the contours by me. No slight here tho! The guitarmill body is the BEST I have used so far. Pickups are by @curtis_novak_pickups JMV in the neck and JM90 in the bridge with no wax potting. The pitch perfect neck is a '62 Strat reissue by Nagano, Japan from @allpartsmusic finished in clear nitro cellulose lacquer from @stewmac_guitar. Made in Japan @fender vibrato. Bridge is by Staytrem--the very best IMO. Other details include a change in lead circuit pot values down to 500k, cloth wiring in correct colors for fun, vintage sprague ceramic on lead tone, orange drop on rhythm, WD pick-guard, unbleached bone nut, Kluson Supreme tuners, set up with @ghsstrings Boomers in 12-52.
