One Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights) was the subject matter for our #moodboardmanicollab this month. Many people think of Aladdin and his lamp due to the popular animated movie, and many also know of Alibaba and the Forty Thieves and Sinbad the Sailor. However, did you know that these stories were really contained within another story? Scheherazade/Shahrazad was a Persian bride whose husband, the sultan/king, had vowed to kill each new bride on the night of the wedding (long story behind why). To save her life, his bride told him a story each night but left it unfinished so that he would have to keep her alive to hear the ending the next night. She would continue this until, finally, he realized her loyalty and fidelity and decided to love her instead of killing her. Romantic, huh? So, I included a ship for Sinbad, a lamp for Aladdin, a cave with gold for Alibaba and a heart for our storyteller's bravery and achievement of love. I really had trouble photographing this because the polishes were so sparkly, so I included a ridiculous amount in different lightings to try and show it. The base is a multichrome with beautiful holo flakies from @danglefootnailpolish called "Apocalypse" and is heavenly on its on. When life throws you a curveball, 'allow time to time' as we say in French. - You may have noticed that I have not been showing up much on socials this past week. No, that was not intentional trust me. It rather caught me by surprise. - I have actually had to slow down for a little while or rather rearrange my business commitments to accommodate for the fact that I had hurt my back and could not move, or barely. I am now much better 🙏 - Nothing dramatic but VERY frustrating and VERY painful! Plus this was a totally new experience for me as I had never had any back problem ever, and if you know me you know that I am used to carrying heavy loads on a regular basis. - So I was shocked when on Monday AM last week a sudden really acute sharp pain just froze me in motion as I was getting out of bed. Crazy! Anyone who's experienced back pain I am with you! - I love my life as a creative entrepreneur, and that episode made me realise how much I am missing being at the bench and being around people. But it's also made clear that being patient and taking time are precious and the results invaluable. - That's actually a lesson that applies across so many things, including jewellery! Whenever I design and handcraft a piece I am reminded that it cannot be rushed, each step is important if you want to create something beautiful and long-lasting. - 📷: the making of the Scheherazade semainier earrings. - Like what you see? Scheherazade was inspired by the tales of The Arabian Nights in which the Sultan vows to take a new wife each night and have her executed the next morning. However, his latest bride, Scheherazade, succeeded in saving herself by engaging the Sultan's interest in a series of interconnected tales. So captivating was she, that “At the end of 1001 nights, and 1000 stories, Scheherazade told the king that she had no more tales to tell him. During these 1001 nights, the king had fallen in love with Scheherazade. He spared her life, and made her his queen”. Danish artist used the story of Scheherazade as the inspiration for this colourful diptych, available @laffichiste (and highlighted here in a client's apartment). ------------- Shéhérazade s'inspire des contes des Mille et Une Nuits dans lesquels le sultan jure de prendre une nouvelle épouse chaque nuit et de la faire exécuter le lendemain matin. Cependant, sa dernière épouse, Shéhérazade, réussit à se sauver en attisant l'intérêt du sultan dans une série d'histoires interconnectées. Elle était si captivante que « Au bout de 1001 nuits et 1000 histoires, Schéhérazade dit au roi qu'elle n'avait plus d'histoires à lui raconter. Durant ces 1001 nuits, le roi était tombé amoureux de Shéhérazade. Il lui a épargné la vie et en a fait sa reine ».
