For the love of wool. For me wool is where it all started. I may not come from a family of farmers, but I do come from a family of knitters. My Grandma taught me to knit when I was still in primary school, and my mum has painstakingly helped me tackle many a project that far superseded my ability throughout life. Wool has always inspired and mesmerised me. Before I ever thought of owning a farm or keeping a sheep my cupboards were stuffed full of the stuff, the unlimited potential of future projects, the mere smell warming some inner part of my creative soul. So when one fateful day our local farmer suggested getting some livestock to keep the grass in check, sheep were the obvious solution - and wool was the key agenda. The rest as they say is history, I've progressed from hoarder to creator, working throughout the seasons with nature to nurture the fibre our flock produces and celebrate the process as it turns from fleece into workable thread. But what is it about wool? Is it that it's produced naturally, as part of our regenerative farming practises? That as a natural material it contains no harmful microfibres or nano plastics? Maybe it's the fact that at the end of it's life it becomes 100% biodegradable? Or that it's a great insulator and temperature controller that's comfy to wear? It has thousands of uses from fashion to homewares through to mulches and tree guards? Or that it's something rooted in my DNA, something that connects me to all the generations that have gone before me (and hopefully will come after me)? If I'm honest it's all of the above and more, there's so many reasons to love wool, to want to work with wool, and simply to hoard wool for impromptu squeezing and inspiration. Our first-ever WoolCycle event this year saw key stakeholders from across South Africa come together to discuss the challenges and opportunities throughout the wool value chain. The discussions aimed to explore the possibilities of a strong wool industry in South Africa that promotes sustainability, inclusivity, and ethical practices, and caters to the demands of responsible consumers. The discussions were facilitated by Jackie May, and speakers included established designers, buyers/processors, spinners, weavers, retailers, and vertical brands, and covered a range of topics related to the challenges and opportunities within the wool value chain. The information and insight this discussion enabled was invaluable.
