Your little ones schedule adapts as they grow but where do you start? Please remember that every child is different so this is why I don’t provide generalised plans; I work closely with your family, I build and design my programs specifically for your child. As you know, focussing on your child’s sleep benefits them in many ways, but what about YOU? Are you struggling with bedtime battles and frequent wakes in the early stages of the night? Wake Windows This is the time a baby is awake before needing to go down for their next sleep. We want to encourage little ones to settle to sleep after their appropriate wake window and as they get older their naps will get longer, meaning the amount of naps needed each day reduces. This is a general guide that we use in the day to help establish a routine that avoids a child getting overtired. If a child goes to bed overtired then they are more likely to have unsettled sleep through the night. As a general guide: Newborn-1 month - 45-60 minutes 1-3 months - 60-90 minutes 3-6 months - 1.5-2.5 hours 6-9 months - 2.5-3 hours 9-12 months - 3-4 hours 12-17 months - 5 hours 18+ months - 5.5-6 hours We normally say that once a child is between 6-7 months old they should be ready to work on a set timed nap schedule instead of working off of wake windows; this does vary slightly from child to child but by making this transition you encourage much better quality naps and their body clock settles much easier and will release melatonin at the correct times to help with those naps and over night sleep. This wonderful family were really struggling, they explained to me that they really had hit rock bottom. They spent months trying everything they could think of, battling with their little boys sleep was tearing them apart. 🌜You know those nights when you’re just tossing and turning, your mind racing faster than a marathon runner? Yup, been there, done that. My other half?
