It's time for an Autumn freshen-up! We're currently releasing water for the environment into the Yarra River (Birrarung) up until the 1st of May. Known as a ‘high flow event’, this release provides a cue for the downstream migration and spawning of the native fish species Australian Grayling and other migratory fish species. The release will also flush fine sediment and organic material from the riverbed, maintain habitat for water bugs, and support native vegetation. We are delivering the water on behalf of the Victorian Environmental Water Holder and as always, we will be monitoring the flows during the release! Up and out early for run #1253 today. It’s a grey drizzly one and I’m definitely missing the sunshine and views from my Australia runs. Here are a few pics taken on my runs in Melbourne, Sydney, the Mornington Peninsula and Sydney Northern Beaches. Mostly in beautiful sunshine bar one day in Avalon, Northern Beaches where we had a 36 hour torrential rainstorm. I kept putting off my run hoping for a lull but it never came so I had to grit my teeth and go. I wore Mr B’s red waterproof running jacket which was a bit too big. It kept my top half dry but all the rain ran down it into my shorts 😆 and I could squeeze my trainers out like sponges afterwards. The photo after that one is taken at the same spot the next day in sunshine, you can see how massive the swell and surf were post-storm. Beguiling. Invasive in Melbourne. River sheoak (Allocasuarina cunninghamiana) is indigenous to NSW and an under-the-radar menace to Melbourne's waterways. They opportunistically sucker along degraded waterway corridors in management-ambiguous/neglected zones like here in Abbotsford. Before you know it, it's too late, like the Birrarung in Alphington where managing bodies have given up trying to control them. Not Abbotsford Riverbankers.💪🙌 To help you understand country in the Abbotsford Birrarung area: you can see how they look like a cross between a radiata pine plantation and an over-planted urban rehabilitation zone - dark, shadowy, repressive (eventually) of biodiversity.☹️ Their matting root systems play havoc with the drainage systems that empty into the local Birrarung, adding to the soil saturation along the river edge that's devastating the river edge in the river's inner suburban reaches with slump & collapse. We're thinning them out again as we paint-poison the Madeira Vine climbing into their canopy. Meanwhile, we're reintroducing Drooping Sheoak (Allocasuarina verticillata) as part of lightly canopied, groundcover-rich basalt floodplains grassy woodland.
