Mondo 17 apr.2024 Le barriere coralline muoiono in massa! È la 4a volta in 30 anni! - La temperatura degli oceani globali, ormai da più di 400 giorni, è a livelli mai raggiunti in precedenza. Da feb.2023 ad apr.2024 si sta verificando un significativo sbiancamento dei coralli sia nell’emisfero settentrionale che in quello meridionale di ciascun principale bacino oceanico. E questa volta potrebbe essere il peggiore in assoluto. Nel 1998 fu interessato il 20% dei coralli mondiali, nel 2010 il 35% e nel periodo 2014-2017 si raggiunse il 56%. Oggi lo sbiancamento dei coralli interessa il 54% dei reef globali, ma la percentuale sta crescendo dell’1% ogni settimana. Lo rende noto la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) degli Stati Uniti. Lo sbiancamento di massa delle barriere coralline è confermato in tutte le regioni tropicali: dalla Florida ai Caraibi, dal Brasile al Pacifico tropicale orientale, dalla Grande Barriera Corallina australiana agli arcipelaghi del Pacifico come Fiji e Vanuatu, ma anche nel mar Rosso, nel golfo Persico, sulla costa orientale dell’Africa, e su quella occidentale dell’Indonesia. Durante le ondate di calore marino prolungate, come questa, la temperatura dell’acqua raggiunge valori molto elevati e i coralli reagiscono allo stress termico liberandosi dei polipi, i microrganismi che li popolano. Più la temperatura rimane su livelli alti, più è probabile che la barriera corallina non riesca a riprendersi dall’evento, con conseguenze ben oltre le regioni colpite e non solo sui reef. Dalle barriere coralline, infatti, dipendono circa il 25% delle specie marine, tra cui almeno 4.000 specie di pesci. Il collasso dei reef può quindi avere effetti a cascata su altri ecosistemi e portare alla riduzione delle popolazioni di molte specie marine. “Mentre gli oceani del mondo continuano a riscaldarsi, lo sbiancamento dei coralli sta diventando sempre più frequente e grave”, è l’allarme lanciato dal NOAA! Dobbiamo assolutamente frenare il riscaldamento del clima globale: dobbiamo ridurre le nostre emissioni climalteranti, riducendo l'impiego delle energie fossili e realizzando la transizione alle energie rinnovabili.

NO CLIMATE JUSTICE ON OCCUPIED LAND In response to the A15 global call for a coordinated economic blockade to free Palestine, climate justice activists in Naarm/Melbourne are calling an action at the BP office in Docklands, on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Boon-wurrung peoples. We demand that the global oil giant BP stops fuelling genocides in Palestine, so-called Australia and on other colonised lands. In late October 2023, Israel awarded BP one of twelve oil and gas exploration licenses off the coast of Gaza, violating Palestinian sovereignty. 6 months later, after more than 30,000 people, most of who are women and children have been brutally killed by Israel, BP has still not rescinded these oil and gas licenses. This is despite worldwide calls to cut economic ties with Israel, and community actions in the UK calling on BP to stop fuelling genocide and cancel these licenses. Just as BP has been fuelling the climate crisis for decades, it is complicit in Israel’s genocide in Palestine. You're kinda a big deal. Really. Big systems, whatever they are, are slow to change. They're heavy and cumbersome and it takes a bit to get them rolling in another direction. So by myself, I'd be pushing mighty hard to get any traction. With you, though, I've got double the odds of making change. And you bring different skills and interests to the table than what I do. If we bring a friend of yours over, we've tripled our impact. And so on it goes. By ourselves, it's a tough journey. Together, we're all good. You build the school gardens and I'll run for local politics, while our friend plants trees on their farm. Next year we'll each do something else. So will others. The system starts to shift, slowly at first, and then it gains speed. This is how apartheid was toppled, hope women got the vote, how old growth logging was banned in Western Australia. By you and me adding our little drop to the wave. Yes, you are special. It's too late, why bother doing anything? Things are already so bad that there's no point. Yikes, how do you feel when you hear this? It's pretty hard to hear, yet we hear it all the time. The thing is, humans deal with big and overwhelming information in one of a handful of ways. One of those ways is to just give up. The 'hide under the covers response'. It doesn't help the issue at all, and it doesn't help the person believing it either, because believing that it's all over is stressful. Another way people can respond to big and overwhelming information is by doing something. This has been shown to help that person, because we feel good when we're engaged in something meaningful. It also helps those around them, because good things have a whole bunch of positive side effects. Any positive change in this world was made up of individuals working together to get the task done. Doing something makes more sense than giving up - It's not too late, ever. Passing 1.5 degrees of warming isn't a milestone at which we stop engaging, it's a sign that we keep going so that we can avoid 2 degrees or more. Just because a war is underway doesn't mean we should give up - we can always help to bring the end of the war forward. And so on. Any big issue, no matter how bad it is, can always be less bad. And the alternative, to hide under the covers, sounds like a pretty dull life to live. Come out into the Sunshine and let's get involved together.
