Al Beidha, is an ancient archaeological site located only a few kilometers north of Petra (15-minute drive from Petra Visitor Center). It is also known as Little Petra due to the similarities in architecture with the Rose City. Unlike Petra though, far fewer tourists visit Al Beidha, creating a more peaceful atmosphere compared to other popular landmarks in Jordan, a place where you can slow down and relax, especially if you go there after visiting Petra, like we did. That was also the main reason why we fell in love with this place and we would definitely recommend for anyone who is visiting Petra to add it in their itinerary. One post just isn’t enough for the wonderful Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) at Al Beidha! Here’s another look at this Nabatean trading route way-station, c. 1st cent. About 8 km (5 miles) north of Petra is Al Beidha, aka “Little Petra” & part of the Petra Archaeological Park & UNESCO World Heritage Site. Like Petra, it was likely built during the Nabatean period in 1st cent. BCE (some later parts around 1st cent. CE) & contains a much smaller siq: Siq al-Barid (“cold canyon”, due to the lack of sunlight into the narrow passage ). It’s thought to have housed caravans traveling the trade route (see my post on Wadi Rum), with hotel & dining facilities. Пройдя сквозь узкий каньон мы попали в его более широкую часть, где перед нами предстали высеченные в скалах подобия фасадов зданий и выдолбленные в них пещерах. Причем многие объекты были идеально ровными и с учетом того, что им более 2000 лет, даже непонятно как они простояли до нашего времени. Назначение пещер доподлинно неизвестно, а самая популярная версия, что они использовались как усыпальницы. Однако такая версия не подтверждена с учетом отсутствия в них останков захоронений. Вторая версия использование пещер для ритуалов тоже не выдерживает критики, поскольку в них не осталось ничего похожего на алтарь! С учетом того, что этот каньон находится в менее чем 10 км от Петры, через которую проходил торговый шёлковый путь, то версия предназначения этих пещер и фасадов в качестве торговых точек более реалистичная! {Piccola Petra} 🇯🇴🇯🇴 Siamo alle porte del sito più famoso tra i due, quello, appunto, di Petra. Piccola Petra, localmente chiamata Al Beidha, era il centro "commerciale" istituito dai nabatei. Se Petra conta numerose tombe reali, Piccola Petra era il fulcro degli scambi commerciali. Abbiamo imparato come i nabatei usassero creare delle cisterne nella roccia, per convogliare l'acqua piovana, che era utile alla popolazione, ma che a volte costituiva anche un pericolo per l'insediamento stesso, causando inondazioni. La roccia qui è tutta arenaria, quindi facile da scolpire perché friabile. Abbiamo attraversato un piccolo Siq e siamo entrati nel vivo del centro abitato. Abbiamo visto come erano strutturate le abitazioni dei nabatei, ingegneri del loro tempo. Little Petra in Jordan, the little brother of the world famous Petra. Little Petra, the local name is Al Beidha, has less monumental buildings than big brother Petra and the buildings are not as richly decorated. This place dates back to 7000 BC when the nomadic people in the region settled down and started farming. Just like in the "big" Petra you walk through a narrow gorge to the village, but this is only 350 meters long. Little Petra is only a few kilometers away from Petra. In Little Petra you will find tombs and temples, interspersed with "simpler" caves. In the photo a tomb near the entrance of Little Petra. At first, a kind of plaza opens up, where a beautiful temple rises above a cave dwelling. A casi 15 km.al sur de Petra existe otra Petra mucho más pequeña su nombre original es AL BEIDHA, significa en árabe "la blanca". Antiguamente era refugio a las caravanas de nabateos que iban a Petra. Los árabes nabateos eran una tribu nómada afianzados en la zona. Little Petra escondida en medio de una montaña es la antesala perfecta que te prepara para conocer a la Gran Petra. En Little Petra mientras recorres el lugar estarán solos, hay muy poco turismo, solamente los vendedores y la gente del lugar con algunos camellos para alquilar por unos minutos. Verás varios monumentos, tumbas nabateas talladas en la roca, un desfiladero pequeño.
