STUDIO UPDATE I want to let everyone know that I am incorporating my painting studio in my home in the Old & Historic District of Church Hill and Union Hill. New work will be published online. After spending some time with the mechanics of paper and glue and paint and how they interact, I was ready to add color to the Paper Series. The first works were monochromatic or metallic, so I started what would become “Chartreuse Plate” with caution. It has become a pivot point in the series, a stepping stone to bolder and more confident work in paper. This was the largest one in the series so far, and the folding and assembly were more complex. Yellow paint and graphite dust, which turned an unpleasant brown-green-gold, provided a foundation on which to build chartreuse, a color I have loved since childhood. I saw chartreuse as an elegant color, quirky and sophisticated, a color for the privileged and the accomplished and never for the timid. I still think of it this way. And then something happened … with the addition of color, the Paper Series moved from ancient rune-tinged objects to more optimistic sudden modernity. Chartreuse Plate was sleek, yet retained a handmade effect that I value in my work and work by others. Lavender Plate developed as a potential companion piece to Chartreuse Plate, but when completed, it functions just as well as a standalone. If I have something to say about chartreuse, you can be sure that lavender comes with its own set of assumptions, assertions, and rules. I am leaving that for another day. The magnolia has been popping up as a motif for me in unexpected places over the past year. So last fall I started painting them. I thought I would explore something more based in realistic rendering. I did, but then I added the graphic element of wallpaper and I liked it better. I have painted several small magnolia paintings that may or may not be finished. But just this week, I finished ‘Sadnolia.' I am showing it beside the first large magnolia painting I did for context and contrast. It’s clear that ‘Sadnolia' is another piece in The July Series. My friend from back home, Pamela Hastings, and I have been acquainted for a long time. We are both from the same place in the heart of Appalachia. She has been very kind to me, even though we don’t know that much about each other beyond casual interaction. Today she posted her cross-stitch work. And it blew me away. My recent paintings from The July Series look so much like it. The July Series is one that I feel close to personally and one also that I am apprehensive about how it will be received as a departure from my other work and in my struggle to communicate what it actually is. Her cross-stitch and other forms of regional art use symbols of events to create a storytelling, one of the most pervasive forms of Appalachian art. And The July Series does this, too. We put our memories and the events that need to be recorded out into the world, often without regard for an artistic style or a specific aesthetic. Yet the same aesthetic is there across so much Appalachian art. Many may see it as naive, but authentic is what it truly is. It speaks from the heart of human experience. I'm not sure exactly what this painting is about. But I know that every detail made perfect sense as it was being painted. It's a departure from recent work, but it also builds on the mark-making and use of symbols and vague objects present in much of my work. While quietly painting this over the past couple months, I got very excited. I couldn't wait to get back to it each day. And it changed in ways I didn't anticipate. I have incorporated words into this. Words that began with a "Don't." That seemed harsh. Then replaced with "Do Not." And I said, "Do not what?" The central image is a hummingbird, which brings me to memories of the mountains and home. Hummingbirds are common there and although we saw them often, they inspired a new amazement every time. "Do not what?" DO NOT HUM. PLEASE. Please do not hum. So now I have this fairly outsider work in oil. With a strangeness and either good advice or an admonition written across its face. And I showed it in progress to a genius friend and collector of my work in my studio a couple weeks ago. She thought it might be hers. Well, now it is. I just completed a series of new work, and I am so happy that it's part of Crossroads Art Center's 20th anniversary event. Crossroads supports artists in countless ways, and it has been my anchor since 2006 when Jennifer Kirby took two of my paintings and within days had sold both of them. The first paintings I ever sold. For a few years after, I was Crossroads highest-selling artist. As I grew, I was engaged by other galleries, designers, and individual collectors. I had some big shows at a few rarefied spaces, and I won an award or two. But I relied always on Crossroads to be my anchor. I didn’t pick up a paintbrush throughout all of 2021. It was the first year since 2004 that I had not created a body of work. Looking back, I’m a little shocked. Tonight as I’m setting up my studio to paint in 2022, I came across this little box with an inscription: “DC: What is an artist if not God’s spokesperson to humanity. — Mother Nile” It was given to me by my high school art teacher, Nile Linkous. I’ve always looked back to her a little unsure of exactly what she did for me, but nevertheless grateful and certain that it was something profound. Sometimes I think she might have meant that when we paint, we speak to our own humanity. It’s an inner process, not a broadcast. Tonight is the closing episode of Hulu's 'Dopesick' starring Michael Keaton. This docudrama about the opioid epidemic has become important to me in a couple ways. The area where I grew up and the mountain people I love were attacked by Big Pharma during one of the most heinous corporate crimes in American history. The set of the hallway outside the corporate boardroom also uses my diptych 'Rabbitrine' as a sort of fly on the wall. The series is hard to watch. The storylines are tragic. And these paintings — which had been created in an unexpected moment of catharsis over my own painful experiences — took on a parallel meaning for me. The hardworking rural people who were my friends and family were also bullied — and worse. Their very lives were taken by individual and corporate greed. I've attached a few snapshots of the television screen where my work is a backdrop to evil being plotted. I've also attached a few photos of 'Rabbitrine' in happier settings in galleries, with my sisters, and on the front page of my hometown newspaper (which printed a great interview). I was reminded of this sweet color palette today in a chat with a designer whom I'm very happy to be working with. This painting, Force.Bloom, was part of my exhibition at Palette Home in the summer of 2018. It was a dual show with Sarah Trundle (a Charlottesville artist and friend), and we had a great time pulling it all together. I was excited that this large painting sold before the opening, but that also meant that very few people had the opportunity to see it. So here it is ... one of my forgotten favorites and a painting that flowed onto the canvas with more ease than I'm accustomed to. As I finish up the pieces I will offer in the Botanical Studies* JEWELS of NATURE series, I am reflecting on what these pieces have meant to me. I've long used nature & organic design in my work and have been influenced by my rural Maryland surroundings. In the past two years I've leaned into seeing the beauty in my immediate perspective. As care and concern for my aging parents has dominated the rhythm of life as well it's been a deep personal struggle to manage my emotional well being. * Painting the botanical pieces over the past few months and breathing in the beauty of my abundant habitat have helped me release the stresses of Iife. * My hope is that resonates as well with you the viewer and collectors as I share these works. "Carnelian" a small botanical study with iridescent tinted paint I placed it on a background of old wallpaper to give an idea of the piece in home decor . My practice has developed with creating these pieces. Which is where my focus has been. I hope to get better at sharing the process here. But most importantly I am painting or drawing nearly everyday! Even on the days when everything else is a bit wonky, I am practicing my craft. I've always needed what creating gives me.
