Brian Robinson was born in 1973 on Waiben (Thursday Island) and is of the Maluyligal and Wuthathi language groups of the Torres Strait and Cape York Peninsula, and is a descendant of the Dayak people of Malaysia. His work is particularly influenced by the myths and legends of the Torres Strait, and the traditional motifs and natural carving ability of the Islanders. Robinson is known for his printmaking, sculpture and public art in which he uses a variety of techniques . In February 2020, Kluge-Ruhe opened the exhibition, Brian Robinson: Tithuyil (Moving with the Rhythm of the Stars). Robinson was a visiting artist in residence at Kluge-Ruhe in conjunction with his exhibition from February 8-March 8, 2020. This is a sneak peek of a new fiber art piece I will be unveiling at my Open Studio October 8! Painting on Dupioni silk, I washed striations of blues and greens into the fibers. Layers of warm green and silver pearlescent paint develop the shimmering undertones. Collage elements snipped from a scarf called Let Me Bloom, I Am dropped in to create a fluttering pattern. Drawing my energetic calligraphy back into wet wash, I used bottle tip applicators filled with pearlescent turquoise and vibrant orange. From now until July 9, pottery made by local artist Rick Morgan will be shown and sold in the Founders Gallery as part of an ongoing fundraiser for the Depot. Rick started throwing clay when a friend asked him to attend a pottery class years ago, but he quickly came to find regular clay throwing boring. Thus, his characteristic flared, flowery bowls were born. Prices vary by size and start as low as $15! 5 Things You Didn’t Know About John Henley:⠀ ______________________________⠀ 1. Began experimenting with photography while on a military tour in Europe, taking pictures of exquisite architecture. John eventually went on to study Photography at San Francisco Art Institute and now teaches Photography at VCU and Virginia State University.⠀ ⠀ 2. After a few years of traditional photography, John conceptualized his book Artists which became a 7 year project. The book is a homage to significant local artists, and provided a way for John to produce increasingly meaningful work.⠀ ⠀ 3. Says “my beginnings in landscape photography were with my father who was an outdoorsman. I learned that in some ways photography is like fishing. You go out with an intention to go to a beautiful place, and even if you don’t catch anything you're still in a beautiful place.”⠀ ⠀ 4. Recently, John has begun a new series called Life Along the James River, which will be shot in black and white. “I’m not just looking for landscapes, I want to combine two things I love: landscapes and portraits. I want to find people who are involved with the river and photograph both.”⠀ ⠀ 5. Ultimately, he believes “art is a way of honoring those people and places that are important to me.
