You’ve seen my art but this is my PTSD reality... In the years after giving birth it meant: Getting through each feed with the promise that I could end my life Vivid flashbacks and panic attacks every time I used the toilet Rapidly developing severe depression Never believing that my baby was really mine Repeatedly asking when my baby’s real mother would come to collect her Panic each time my baby cried because it overwhelmed me A devastated memory where I sometimes forgot my baby’s name Dread every morning when I woke and realised that it hadn’t been a dream. I had no idea birth related PTSD existed until a midwife casually mentioned it. Until that point I’d been told to suck it up, ignore it or focus on how lucky I’d been. And while I no longer suffer from most of these symptoms, the impact of the experience was lifelong: Bell’s Palsy, ADHD, the loss of my career, a reliance on anti-psychotic medication to sleep and daily anxiety. I now adore my 16 year old daughter so much that I break a little more each time I think of her leaving home (why do I feel the need to even tell you that? In case you think I’m a monster?). However experiencing the horror of PTSD means that I could never produce just one piece of art about it. I’m prepping the next one right now. If you thought the first one was brutal, grab your popcorn. This illustration was created for medical education to explain the role of melanocytes in our body. Melanocytes are cells that produce the pigment melanin. Melanosomes transfer melanin to the surrounding keratinocytes. The melanin then organizes above the nucleus inside each cell and protects the skin from UV radiation. Additionally, melanocytes create pigmentation in the skin and hair. Although everyone has a similar number of melanocytes, the amount of melanin produced varies, resulting in different skin colors. When exposed to sunlight, melanin production increases, giving the appearance of a tan. You asked me how I stitched this so settle in… I did it over several months for a start. The completed piece is 60 x 45 cms so way bigger than my previous 9 inch hoops. Just a square inch of this (especially on the fist) took me several hours because of my manic commitment to shading. As ever, after blocking in colour I worked in single strands of thread to get it just right. Specsavers loves me. The writing used up approx 50 metres of thread and if I never stitch an ‘a’, ‘e’ or ‘g’ again I’ll die a happy embroiderer. Lettering goes to pot quickly if you cheat at it so I often worked stitches just 2 or 3mm long to capture the curves. You’d think that working on the words would be upsetting but it quickly became so tedious that they almost lost their power over me. As for the coffee stain, scribbles, folds etc… they were the fun bits after the slog. They still took a lot of thought and planning (esp that terrifying one-shot-only coffee) but they helped me make friends with the piece again (think having a laugh with your husband after having a fight). And while I can give you all of the deets you want there’s still part of me that has no idea how any of it happened. I kind of went into an artistic trance and woke when it was done.
