This morning at 8 am, we found ourselves sitting in the convent chapel of the contemplative Missionaries of Charity — Mother Teresa of Calcutta‘s order that serves the poorest of the poor — in Brooklyn, in a location the @NYTimes once called a “weary section of Bushwick.” While the active branch serves those in material poverty, the contemplative branch serves the “spiritually poor” by praying for the world and for peace. We were happy to join them for more than three hours of prayer — but the Sisters were only getting started, spending most of their waking hours in prayer, meditation, and contemplation before the Blessed Sacrament in Eucharistic Adoration (10 am - 6:30 pm daily, and ‘til 7 pm Wednesdays and Sundays). We were invited to join them today on the heels of attending yesterday’s monthly Midday Retreat @svsc_nyc featuring Sister Nirmala Joshi, MC, who led the order to global expansion upon Mother Teresa’s death in 1997. A Hindu convert to Catholicism, Sister Nirmala earned a master’s degree in political science and a doctorate in law — and was clearly not only intelligent but very wise. In all their chapels next to the Cross are the words “I THIRST” (John 19:28), a reminder of how much God thirsts for our love and for us to turn to Him so He can shower us with His Love. And in this convent chapel, that Love is almost palpable! Praise be to God! In response to the popular PEW research study done in 2019, finding only one third of Catholics believe in the true presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, a new study by CARA shows that number has increased! The 2023 study now shows that two thirds of US Catholics believe in the true presence. Prayer Jesus, my Lord and my God, why should I fear judgement, either in Confession or after my death, when it is you who are my judge? Not an impartial judge either, but one biased irrevocably in my favour, a judge who died to take away my sins and the sins of the world. I recall the words of St Francis de Sales: "I would rather be judged by God than by my own mother." Yes, Lord, sin is ugly and destructive. I squirm at the thought of my own wrongdoings. At times a deep sense of shame and remorse comes over me. I feel, painfully, the truth of our words before Holy Communion: "Lord, I am not worthy to receive you..." But I come to you, not because I am worthy but because I need you, and you invite me: "Come to me, all you who are weary and heavily burdened." Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, Friend and Brother, here in your presence I am also in the presence of the Father and the Holy Spirit, since all three are one and inseparable.
