Antisemitism and hatred led to the murder of 6 million Jews during the Holocaust. The fact that antisemitism is growing across the globe 79 years after the war ended seems incomprehensible. In a very unexpected coincidence, I aired the second episode of Conversations with Alan featuring my mother’s Holocaust survival story on the same day as the insurrection on our nation’s capital on January 6, 2021. It’s been two years since that crazy day in Washington and I thought I would share this episode once again as a reminder that my life story is one that could have turned out quite differently if not for some very brave men and women who risked their lives and the lives of their families to save my mother and my father when the Nazi's started rounding up Jews for deportation to concentration camps during World War II. Morey’s book, Running Breathless: An Untold Story of WWII and the Holocaust, was first released in 2018. The book tells the story of Morey’s father, Van Wolf Kogul’s, experience during World War II. His father was first a refugee, fleeing from the German invasion of Poland into the Soviet Union. He was then a soldier in the Soviet Army fighting the Germans. And lastly after the war he became a Survivor, eventually coming to the United States to start a new life for his family. Morey remembers at the age of seven his father returning home, sensing that something was very wrong his mother explained that his father had just learned what happened to some family members during the war. Growing up with random stories about the war, Morey was curious. 10 years after that incident, with that memory etched in his mind he started to ask more questions. He asked his father permission to document his survival story for posterity, for the family. After graduation from college, Morey came back to his father one more time to fill in some of the gaps. Van Wolf Kogul gave him the permission he needed to draft a memoir that has become, Running Breathless. Morey’s book, upon publication, was immediately accepted into the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s library and remains a part of their collection. Morey continues to speak at several venues about his father’s story and Holocaust lessons and has been interviewed by multiple media outlets. They are the last living link to survivors. It is primarily through them that future generations will hear the actual stories of their grandparents’ survival. All of these individuals feel a deep commitment to know and tell these stories, and to place them within the greater context of the Holocaust. 3GNY also raises awareness about human rights issues and genocide – past and present. To accomplish this, 3GNY creates forums where members meet, learn, connect and share ideas. Founded in 2005 with a group of six, 3GNY’s membership now exceeds 4000. 3GNY organizes diverse programming, including museum tours, film screenings, theatre engagements, discussion groups, book readings, visits and dialogue with survivors, Shabbat dinners, Jewish cultural events, intergenerational gatherings, genealogy workshops and field trips.
