KARST serves as a meeting point for a multiplicity of concerns explored through paint. Spanning generations, genders, continents and connected through friendships - some in real life and others virtual - conversations emerge allowing for overlapping conceptual and material attitudes to chime. Bernadette Kerrigan’s visual vocabulary indicates the multifaceted and mutable significance of things. Chris Martin’s colourful works merge encyclopaedic figuration with painterly abstraction. Daniel Pettitt’s paintings track fluctuations of index, memory, fragment, metaphor and mood as they congeal and dissolve into partial images. EJ Hauser combines impressions of natural phenomena with lyrical phrases, graphic and typographic strategies. The exhibition’s title, taken from David Byrne and Brian Eno’s eponymous collaborative album and song, serves as a thematic anchor, highlighting the interconnectedness of creative endeavours and underscoring the importance of unity and camaraderie. It can also be understood as a poetic declaration on all the possibilities available when making a painting - intuition, design, chance, and technique are all factors that come into play. Rather than attempting to define a movement in contemporary painting, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today brings into focus the social relationships and networks through which painters can share ideas - as well as spheres of influence and access to platforms, such as this exhibition. [1] "Packing up the studio in December 2022 to make way for the new Freelands Fellow. The studios I occupied at the university over my year there quickly became mirrors of how I think and act, making fertile spaces in which to paint and draw." [2] "One of the last drawings made in Brighton, 'Grand Parade' gave its title to the series of works on paper made across the year. Grand Parade is also the location of the University of Brighton arts campus, a 1960s block sitting incongruously alongside once grand Georgian townhouses running down towards the sea, originally the epicentre of the seaside resort in its Regency heyday; a place to see and be seen. #artisttakeover Artist Daniel Pettitt (@_daniel_pettitt_) looks back at his fellowship at @uniofbrighton, where he produced the works currently on display as part of CUCKOO (open until 5 March). Here’s part 1/2 of his #artisttakeover [1] "The studio is vital for making work; colliding ideas and taking risks with materials. Many of the pieces on show on Cuckoo were made after an intense summer of painting at the University of Brighton. Over these months I was able to expand into a larger studio and move more rapidly with the works." [2] "Drawing is essential to my practice. If a canvas is going out of control I step back from it and draw, for me these are works in their own right and it was important to find a framing mechanism so show them alongside paintings. Each day I would pass noticeboards in the university hallways, enjoying the cascade and overlay of posters and sign up sheets making for an unintended palimpsest, not so disimilar to my studio floor and and walls. As friend observed: these works on paper lay together in groups, ensconced inside vitrines that suggest specimen cabinets or 19th century museum curatorial design, simultaneously visible and protected." Nick Stewart (born Winchester) was an artist, researcher, educator as well as a partner, father, friend and free-thinker. He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Oxford (BA 1976), and fine art at Goldsmiths, University of London (MA 2001, PhD 2013). He taught at the Royal Academy Schools. His PhD thesis, titled Abstraction and Comedy, developed out of readings of Freud and Hegel in dialogue with his photographic work, examples of which are included in the exhibition. This strand of his work consisted of meticulously constructed paper models that were photographed to create ambiguously abstracted images. These are deliberately formal, serial and devoid of topographical context. They refer equally to architecture, signage, sculpture, product design and a milieu of generic late modernism that straddles multiple subcultures. . ‘Of Clocks and Clouds’ 28 July – 17 July 2021 ‘Of Clocks and Clouds’ brings together artworks by a diverse range of painters spanning continents, generations, and approaches to the medium in which they work. The exhibition title riffs off an eponymous painting from the 1990s by Bernard Cohen. Cohen’s work is itself named for the 1970s orchestral piece for female voices by György Ligeti; ’Clocks and Clouds’. A hallucinogenic and occasionally nauseating piece of music that rises and ripples in an overlay of haunting cadences. Ligeti’s title in turn is an echo of philosopher Karl Popper’s method of dividing the world into two categories “to distinguish time we live in, inconsistent and elusive, from the mechanical time civilisation forces on us.” Clocks are “neat orderly systems that can be solved through reduction; clouds are an epistemic mess, highly irregular, disorderly, and more or less unpredictable.” Let us frame Popper’s position around the act of painting; an activity that commonly deploys seemingly disorderly methods via the accretion of colour and form at varying ratios. Adapting Popper’s duality, paintings are ambivalent clocks shrouded in clouds. Gesture and meaning have latent and actual potency to communicate, obfuscate, withdraw, resurrect. Through the duration of their making, the works in this exhibition set in motion a conversation about the meaning of time and gesture today.
