Many people assume that deepfake videos are strictly used for malicious reasons, and even though they usually are sometimes there is a positive strategic way for it to be used. Knowing that there are positive beliefs to creating deepfake videos allows me to realize that there might also be an ethical approach anytime someone posts a video online. In support of my position, the article “ Debating the Ethics of DeepFakes” says that the creators of deep fake videos must employ the media ethically to prevent harm to others. Digitalisierung, Ethik & Werte – interdisziplinäre Lehrveranstaltung mehrerer MCI Departments Herausforderungen aufgrund von neuen Technologien im Bereich der Digitalisierung erfordern eine Debatte, die mehrere Perspektiven inkludiert. Dies da eine Fachdisziplin alleine nicht in der Lage ist die Informationen zu liefern die notwendig sind, um Herausforderungen wie künstliche Intelligenz (KI), Blockchain, Bilderkennunssysteme etc., zu verstehen und dann auch entsprechend diskutieren zu können. Fünf Lektoren des MCI haben Ende Jänner mit Studierenden aus dem Bereich Mechatronik | Medizintechnik diese technischen Herausforderungen aus einer interdisziplinären Perspektive diskutiert. Stephan Schlögl @schlogls (Management, Communication & IT) und Pascal Schöttle (Digital Business & Software Engineering) haben die Mensch-Maschine Interaktion von „sozial intelligenten Maschinen“ (siehe Bild) bzw. die Sicherheit von Deep Learning-Algorithmen erläutert. Basierend darauf haben Daniel Degischer und Markus Frischhut (beide: Management & Recht) die betriebswirtschaftlichen (Business Model Adaptation/Transformation) bzw. die EU-rechtlichen (Ethik und Werte) Aspekte thematisiert. Benjamin Massow (Mechatronik) hat die für viele bedeutende Frage der Auswirkungen des verstärkten Einsatzes von Robotern auf die künftige Arbeitswelt (‘future of work‘) beleuchtet. Very thankful for invitation to today’s ‘Health in Europe’ Virtual Discussion Series at Lancaster University, organized by Mary Guy, and all the thought provoking questions | my contribution on ‘EU law, common values and public health’ | https://wp.lancs.ac.uk/health-in-europe/ Abstract: EU integration has started at an economic level (coal and steel) in order to safeguard peace, and has later on expanded to #humanrights and the political level. The Lisbon Treaty has turned the EU into a Community or Union of values. Likewise, since the 1990s, we can identify an increasing reference in EU law to non-legal concepts such as #ethics (and #morality). The EU’s common #values enshrined in Article 2 TEU are sometimes well defined (e.g. non-discrimination), sometimes rather broad and undetermined (e.g. #pluralism, #tolerance). Sometimes we seem to have a clear understanding of a value like ‘ #solidarity’, but struggle to apply it various fields, such as #migration, or the current #pandemic. Solidarity is a good example of a ‘concept’, which can be qualified both as a ‘value’ and as a ‘principle at the same time. Principles tend to be more concrete, can have legal addressees and can lead to legal consequences. This approach of values that are more abstract, as well as more concrete principles can be found in the 2006 Health Values document of the Health Ministers, which provides more clarification in one specific field. Finally, in December 2020 the ECJ has established animal welfare as the first value outside Article 2 TEU, and for the first time addressing animals and not humans. As the Charter has been referred to as a ‘living instrument’, we can discuss, if and how health should be seen as a value. Not only do the international commitments that States have undertaken to reduce disease prevalence often call for regulatory interventions, there is also a growing recognition that law as a discipline has a major role to play in framing effective public health strategies at global, regional, national and local levels. To respond to this evolution, EUPHA decided to set up a new Law and Public Health section in October 2020. SpeakUp, in collaboration with Debate Mate Masterclass, presents a unique opportunity for young students to learn the art of communicating with confidence. Led by Debate Mate Mentor, Ella, a rising senior at Yale University, students will learn to communicate with clarity, present with impact and learn to debate like a champ. The interactive session will have Ella share top communication tips and give a glimpse of the Speak Up Core Programme. Ella is currently double majoring in English Literature and Political Science. Based on the 2016-2019 Jean Monnet Chair on Ethics, the new 2019-2022 Chair on Values starts on September 1st. By the end of August 2019 the Jean Monnet Chair on EU and Ethics, established by the EU (and named after the founding father of the EU), comes to a successful end. Numerous publications, courses, guest speeches at international conferences, but also lectures at and for schools ( #EUfürSchüler #EU4schools #EuropainderSchule) were the main activities of this chair. I am very thankful and pleased that the new Jean Monnet Chair on EU values and ethics, recently approved by the European Commission, can be launched immediately afterwards. This new Chair, entitled "EU Values & DIGitalization for our CommuNITY (DIGNITY)", is based on the results of the previous Chair of Ethics as published in the Open Access book "The Ethical Spirit of EU Law" (https://bit.ly/2OfHBhA; or via link in Bio) and will now focus on EU values. This new chair will focus both on the importance of values for people in the EU as a community, and on the field of digitalization (artificial intelligence, etc.), where ethics and values are currently (not only in the EU) strongly emphasised. The mentioned activities such as publications, teaching events, lectures at conferences and for schools will be continued in a proven way. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me during this previous chair and look forward to further projects in the future. Bericht im Jahrbuch 2018/19 des Reithmann Gymnasium zu unserem Generationendialog zum Thema „Europäische Werte“ Dieser #EU4schools Event fand wenige Tage vor den EU Wahlen (SO 26. Mai) am MI den 22. Mai 2019 im Haus der Begegnung (HdB) statt. Organisiert wurde diese Veranstaltung vom „Fachreferat Interreligiöser und Interkultureller Dialog“ | HdB (Magdalena Modler-El Abdaoui), dem Reithmann Gymnasium Innsbruck (Ulrike Mast), sowie vom Jean Monnet Lehrstuhl für „EU und Ethik“ (Markus Frischhut) am Management Center Innsbruck (MCI). Seit November 2018 wurden SchülerInnen des Reithmann Gymnasiums im Rahmen der modularen Oberstufe (MOST) in mehreren Treffen sowohl inhaltlich als auch betreffend die organisatorischen Aspekte einer solchen Veranstaltung vorbereitet. Nach einer Keynote von Eva Lichtenberger (vormals Abgeordnete zum Europäischen Parlament) zum Thema gemeinsame Werte in der EU, moderierten die Schülerinnen und Schüler die Diskussionsrunden zu den verschiedenen Werte der EU und konnten damit auch wertvolle Erfahrungen betreffend die Leitung einer solchen Veranstaltung sammeln. Gerade die Umsetzung der im EU-Vertrag festgeschriebenen Werte wurde von den TeilnehmerInnen in der Diskussion als wichtig angesehen. Das Konzept der Veranstaltung ist auch insofern aufgegangen, als die unterschiedlichen Altersgruppen jeweils wertvolle und sich ergänzende Sichtweisen mit einbringen konnten. Bei einem anschließenden Buffet, das durch die freundliche finanzielle Unterstützung der „Abteilung Südtirol, Europaregion und Außenbeziehungen“ des Amtes der Tiroler Landesregierung ermöglicht wurde, konnte der Gedankenaustausch sodann noch in angenehmer Atmosphäre fortgesetzt werden. Übersicht EU Recht und Religion Ein Beispiel dafür, wie das EU-Recht heutzutage immer mehr Bereiche des täglichen Lebens betrifft, so auch Bereiche die man vor einigen Jahren vermutlich nicht mit dem EU-Recht gedanklich in Verbindung gebracht hätte. Fragen des Arbeitsethos: kann für bestimmte Tätigkeiten die Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten Religionsgemeinschaft gefordert werden, da man ansonsten nicht eingestellt oder umgekehrt ansonsten gekündigt wird? Sogenannte Kopftuch-Fälle: handelt es sich hier um eine Diskriminierung aufgrund der Religion, oder gibt es die Möglichkeit einer Rechtfertigung? Derzeit in Österreich in aller Munde, das sogenannte Karfreitag-Urteil und die Frage, ob man mehr oder weniger Tage frei hat, je nachdem welcher Religionsgemeinschaft man angehört. But these hatred messages that you find on social media are not only addressed to migrants that arrived in Europe without having any right to enter. Didn't you notice the hatred messages towards the home Italian minister Matteo Salvini? Why did you talk only about the hatred messages towards the migrants? And did you ask yourself and to the European commission why some people have these sentiments towards the illegal immigrants? Have you tried to visit some Italian cities like Rome, Napoli or Milan? Well if you haven't done, you should. And you could see the situation over there. Don't you know that many of these migrants do criminal activities? Didn't you know about the cases of Pamela Mastropietro and Desiree Mariottini (just to mention two cases but there were many more unfortunatly)? Well these 2 young girls were brutally raped and killed by some migrants. Don't you know that the crime rate in Italy (crimes done by the migrants) have raised fearfully? You should try to go and live in some areas of Rome, Milan or Napoli and you would understand why some people don't love so much these illegal immigrants. What did the EU do to control and to regulate the immigration? It is too easy to accuse some Italian people who have bad sentiments towards the migrants without knowing the situations. I truly hope nobody had the impression I’m discriminating vegans or having stereotypical opinions of vegans or anybody else. What I wanted to convey was simply, that we need to have informed opinions, genuine debates, and we need to educate ourselves and each other (with respect and kindness), instead of contemptuous verbal slaughter. Because that won’t make things better! So how do we make things better? Let’s start with an honest wish to be more wise and compassionate. And we might as well use this social media for having these discussions, since we’re here already - and are so lucky to be surrounded by immensely kind, caring and beautiful souls.
True, it’s hard not to over simplify things in these kind of media. No subject of any importance can ever be covered in its complexity here, only in tiny drops. But I believe we must try anyway, because life is too short and too important to only be about tiny squares with coffee cups and whatnot.
