A lot of our decisions are secretly influenced by hidden factors. Here’s a quick story to prove this point. Researchers took people attending a health conference and divided them into two groups. Each group was offered a breakfast buffet where all the food choices were the same between the two groups. The buffets included... Cheesy eggs. Bacon. Fried potatoes. Cinnamon rolls. Granola. Yogurt. Fresh fruit. One group mostly ate the cheesy eggs and potatoes while the other group mostly ate the fresh fruit and yogurt. So how did the researchers get the two groups to make different food choices? The researchers presented the order of the foods differently to each group. They found 75% of people took the first food they were shown. If someone saw cheesy eggs first, they’d usually eat that. If someone saw fresh fruit first, they’d usually eat that. The participants weren’t aware their food “choices” were really being influenced by what they saw first. There are a couple of takeaways in how this pertains to business. The first is you want to make your first choice the right choice. When you start your day making good choices, it creates momentum that carries forward to the rest of your day. The second takeaway is that the problem for many isn’t a “lack of willpower,” but rather a poor environment. It may seem obvious, but if you surround yourself with positive and uplifting people as the first thing you see, you’ll tend to make better choices. So consider, how can you create an environment where success becomes almost automatic? #martial #business #fighttipscombo #sale

Topic: Mobility Why does it matter? How often should you do it? What movements should you do? Why does it matter? 1) Unlocking hidden gains. If you’re not working in a full range of motion on a given exercise, and then you unlock the range of motion (i.e. full depth squat, head through your OHP) you may see a certain muscle grow substantially. 2) Injury proofing. The more mobile you are, the harder it is to get hurt. Plain and simple. 3) Just being able to move more freely. I love martial arts - so I see huge benefits in BJJ and the more acrobatic kicks. 4) Warming up. Mobility work helps to warm you up in a local muscle group, or systemically. How often? You can’t do it too much, unlike resistance training. Do it 5 times a day if you want. Which movements? Up to you, try them all. I like most things in the quadruped, 90/90, scapular rotations, shoulder dislocates, YTWL, etc. Pictured above is Adam Schafer, with his signature “Squat and Scroll.” I used this pic because @mindpumpmedia has some great mobility stuff. Topic: Goal Weights for Tactical Athletes This picture of Chris Bumstead absolutely diced out of his gourd and winning the Olympia had me thinking about goal weights. Most people see someone this lean and they’re like “wow, that guy is fit.” But ask anyone who’s ever been super lean, those guys are so depleted when they’re on stage - they’re miles (by miles I mean pounds of body fat) away from peak performance. If Bumstead had to run a certain time on a track, lift a certain weight, or compete in any athletic endeavor he would want to be fatter. That’s just the truth. Depending on who you are, you’re probably the most athletic between 10-18% body fat. If you want to lean out, notice when your performance starts to drop off. Being lighter can help you manipulate your own bodyweight, it can be easier on your joints, and it can make you faster. Being heavier can make you stronger, and give you more weight to leverage in a fight. There is a “correct” weight for you, but you have to find it. There are other things to consider like the partitioning ratio. At what weight is your body sending your brain the most anabolic signal to build muscle? On that note, if you’re an advanced enough athlete, you’ll probably need to consider bulking and cutting in order to put on muscle. I’ll make posts on how to do those properly in the near future. In the meantime: Be an asset, don’t be so big it hurts your mobility and speed, don’t be so lean it hurts your strength and leverage.

Topic: Taking your sport to the street. This confrontation between Canelo and Plant is so valuable for tactical athletes and people concerned about self defense. 1) The confrontation starts with Canelo pushing Plant. Canelo is off balance - this is the last time he’ll be off balance for the duration of the confrontation, as he soon steps back into a stance. 2) Canelo carried out a flawless pull to avoid the wild left hand. Enabling him to stay in range when his weight returns to its normal distribution. 3) Canelo is now in a dominant position and begins to reign down looping palm strikes. Let me say that again - PALM STRIKES. He wasn’t about to break his hands or wrists over Plant’s skull. Plant did the same with his left slap/hook. 4) At this point Plant realizes that he’s late to the fight and steps back into a stance and an inside slip. He was ready to defend himself, but Canelo was likely going to win the exchange due to momentum. Here’s the main thing I want you to get out of it: They’re not in the ring and they can still fight very well - both of them. Not only that, they had the wherewithal to use palm strikes. Take notes.

Topic: Keeping an Opponent on the Ropes Whether it’s ropes or a wall, there a few simple keys to keeping an opponent pinned against something. If it’s a 180° angle, aka a straight wall and not a corner, you need to keep them at straight punch range. Use 1s and 2s (+kicks if you have them) to keep them moving laterally along that surface. If you get closer to them, they will lean into you and pivot around you. Also, keep them directly in front of you and don’t let them gain any sort of angle. I like to keep them guessing with lots of feints and half steps with the lead leg. If you’re in any sort of corner (90° in a boxing ring, 135° in an octagon), you can try to keep them contained with longer looping punches. Go high and low and make sure you’re threatening their head, liver, and solar plexus. Crowding them too much is still dangerous, you want to maintain positional dominance so try to avoid close in-fighting and the clinch.

Topic: Should Boxers and Other Combat Sports Athletes Lift Weights? My answer is yes. There are too many benefits to ignore it. Global movements in general, regional compound lifts, and (in some cases) olympic lifts. Lifting can build a fighters power, quickness, raw strength. There is a “myth” that lifting weights will make a fighter muscle-bound and slow - which just isn’t true. There are a few more factors to consider, one of which is simplicity. The lifts should be simple and not incredibly difficult to learn because we want to train the fighters’ muscles, not spend training hours making them into competitive weightlifters. Beyond that, sport specificity is huge. I love exercises with the landmine, especially the landmine press. Floor presses are great and simulate the ROM of punches. KB work also seems to have a good amount of carry over, specifically full body movements with the KB. I would also work “pull” through rows and pull-ups to activate the antagonists of some of those pressing muscles - pull muscles help in combat sports more than some would think. Squats are also great for fighters for obvious reasons. In general, if you can simulate a movement that you’re doing in your sport through a loaded exercise that doesn’t compromise your biomechanics, it’s probably a good move. Follow me: @jabswithjake

Topic: Learning Curve and Training Specificity It’s not just “a fight.” Every fight is different. Combat sports are drastically different from one another, being good at one does not automatically make you good at another. Tyron Woodley is 1) an MMA fighter, 2) a wrestler, and 3) a striker with with a base in Muay Thai. Jake Paul has focused solely on boxing, and is 20lbs heavier than the welterweights that Woodley is used to fighting. The kid can scrap, guys. He’s a boxer - and a decent one. Sure, he’s picking on grappling based MMA fighters, because that’s the only way he could beat an actual fighter at this stage in his career. Everyone knows that’s what he’s doing, yet people are still watching - so, good for him. I picked against Jake when he fought Ben, just because I love Ben and am indifferent about Jake, but to be honest, I had my doubts that Ben would win that fight. This time, I picked Jake to win for a myriad of reasons. My point is this: there is a steep learning curve when stepping into any sort of combat sport, they’re all so different. I would go so far as to say that 90% of what matters is training specificity. Woodley got a little help from his MMA experience, but the ranges are so different, the gloves are so different, the stances are so different, the timing is so different. It’s like expecting an olympic sprinter to be able to hang with a decent olympic distance triathlete - it could happen, but it normally wouldn’t because the sprinter would have to train for a long time to develop the aerobic capacity. That being said, I wonder who Jake Paul will decide to pick on next, and how long it will be before he fights a striker. Follow me: @jabswithjake Follow HTK: @hardtokill_fitness

Topic: Peaking Should an operator train like an MMA fighter? The short answer is, no. The reason has a lot to do with peaking. Fighters will often take weeks off from training, then engage in a fight “camp” where they spent a certain amount of time, normally 8-10 weeks, preparing for a bout. At the beginning of this camp they’ll focus on general preparedness and hone in on their lifting, cardio, and general athleticism. As the event draws nearer, they’ll focus more on fight tactics and being ready for fight night. The operator can’t do that, and should probably do the exact opposite. Can they still follow a phasic model of training? Bulking, cutting, or focusing on something for a span of time - yes. But their skills need to remain sharp at all times, and they need to have a good handle on their recovery. Meaning, instead of maximizing their general preparedness at any given time, they should probably hover just above MEV (minimum effective volume) and maintain a constant state of readiness. Sure, if they were to peak they could choose a few weeks out of the year to be the most prepared of their life, but at the cost of having to come down from that peak.
